If this patent goes through, Apple might bring an app called “ID App” for iPhones which will let users select from RFID, Camera or Infrared Input to identify objects in their surroundings. Shared by AppleInsider, this patent will revolutionize the way iPhone works.
App for Identifying objects:
One of the more interesting filings covers a new identification application apparently under development by Apple that would help identifying objects in a user’s surroundings so that their iPhone can present additional information about the identified objects.
For example, today’s iPhones are capable of taking a picture of art in a museum, but don’t have the capability to provide the user with detailed information about the piece of art, such as the name of the painter or any other related information. Similarly, iPhones can snap pictures of structural items such as bridges and buildings, but not identify them.
Apple’s solution calls for a new “ID App” that would automatically determine users’ current environment and allow them to select from a list detection technology such as an RFID reader, a camera, or an IR image capture device. Based on the selected mode, the iPhone could then adjust parameters used for searching a remote identification database, or collection of databases.

Isnt that cool. Is there anyone who has gone ahead and downloaded every app on App Store? No One!!! But say hypothetically, if you were to buy all 55,732 apps currently available in the App Store it would cost you just $144,326.06.

This research was done by none other than our very own Gizmodo

I think ‘Metal Detector’ app is going to be the first iPhone app that is made to work for iPhone 3GS. Metal Detector app uses information obtained from the iPhone’s compass to estimate the strength of the observed magnetic field, and then detects increases in strength that occur when the iPhone is placed near a ferromagnetic metal (like steel or iron). Cool idea.
Many metals contain oxides (like magnetite or lodestone) which can cause measurable variations in the readings of a magnetic compass.

Give it a try. The price of this app has just been dropped from $0.99 to zero. Here is the App Store link to download from iTunes.

Well video streaming over HTTP promises to open up standards-based video broadcasting to a wide audience while giving mobile users an optimized picture as they roam between WiFi and mobile networks. AppleInsider has this brilliant article on how HTTP steaming would benefit iPhone 3.0:
The real benefit to HTTP Live Streaming is that the server can maintain multiple versions of the clips in different formats. This allows an iPhone user with a WiFi connection to negotiate a higher quality version of the video than if only EDGE were available. Even better, the phone can renegotiate a higher or lower quality dynamically if it improves or loses signal. This enables the watcher to experience the best video quality possible at the current bandwidth available, continually optimized as new segments are requested.
The simple video streaming outlined in HTTP Live Streaming is similar to SHOUTcast in that it uses a regular HTTP server and posts content data using and extended version of the M3P (MP3 Playlist) format that supports video as well. That will make it easy for homebrew broadcasters to set up Internet TV broadcasts following the same pattern as Internet radio.

There is this cool app called Prowl in App Store that can push notify your gmails on to your iPhone. Pretty cool stuff. This $2.99 Prowl works along with Growl, a universal notification application for Macs, to push desktop notifications to your iPhone. But this works on your Mac only. The current version of Growl for Windows doesn’t yet work with Prowl.
Lifehacker shares this bit of info: Whenever an application sends a notification to Growl, Growl sends that notification to Prowl’s servers, which in turn sends a push notification to your iPhone. So, for example, if you’ve got Growl set up to display new Gmail notifications (details below), Prowl can push those same notifications to your iPhone. The cool part about Prowl is that it doesn’t just work with Gmail—it works with anything that Growl does.
Prowl is a Growl client for the iPhone OS. Notifications from your computer are sent to your iPhone or iPod Touch over push, with a full range of customization.
• Push Notifications—When a Growl notification pops up on your computer, it’s sent to Prowl over push and displayed on your iPhone. • History—Up to 30 days of notifications are kept on the server. You can delete notifications that you don’t want to see any more, or remove all of your history.
• Customized notifications—Only events you want are sent to Prowl. Inside the Growl preferences, you can set what priority should be sent, or how long after your machine has been idle the events should begin sending.
• Send any message to your device—From the Prowl website, you can send any amount of text to your device: links and phone numbers are automatically linked, so you can easily navigate around without having to worry about typos.

iPhone Dev Team have finally updated their redsn0w and ultrasn0w tools to support iPhone 3GS running on 3.0 OS. Earlier they had decided to wait till 3.1 firmware gets released. I think this released happened because Purplera1n unlocked 3GS ahead of them. Follow the downloading and installation instructions thats available on Dev Teams blog:
For those of you who already own 3GS phones, the outlook is bright. As long as you have your personalized (signed) dfu/img3 files, you’ll always be able to jailbreak (even if you slip up and install stock Apple firmware in the future). For those of you without 3GS phones, it’s a race against the clock to use this particular hole. There’s nothing we can do about that, but we will always be looking for new holes.
ultrasn0w unlockers — You all must remain particularly vigilant against upgrading your basebands, since doing so will kill the unlock (for most phones, there’s no going backwards in baseband version). Apple has gotten very serious with the latest baseband — they’ve removed 180 (!) commands in an effort to cut down their exposure to holes. So please always stay away from stock Apple IPSWs and instead use our tools as we release them. These tools let you update your firmware without updating your baseband.
Those installing ultrasn0w will probably also need to do a single run of Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings. We’re testing various fixes for that particular glitch.
