AppleInsider broke this news sometime back – Apple is finally planning to offer a “full-on solution” for multitasking in version 4.0 of the iPhone OS
Apple this summer will go a long way towards silencing critics and catering to one of the most prevalent demands of its iPhone user base, when it introduces a multitasking solution through the handset’s 4.0 software update that will finally allow several third party apps to run concurrently and in the background.
An inability to run more than one application at a time is one of the most frequent criticisms of the iPhone OS – and the ability to multitask is often touted as a point of differentiation by rival handset makers. The new version of the iPhone OS is expected to launch this summer.
From a user-facing perspective, Apple plans to deliver a multi-tasking manager that leverages interface technology already bundled with its Mac OS X operating system, according to those same people. It was requested that specifics be withheld at this time, as the iPhone Software 4.0 remains under development and reportedly has a quite ‘way to go’ before it’s ready for prime time.
Quick Update: Globally there was a 37.2% growth in smartphone shipment in 2009. And iPhone saw a jump of 97.9% during the same period. AppleInsider reported this news – Analyst Charlie Wolf with Needham & Company told clients that the smartphone market has turned into a “land grab” that’s “virtually certain” to lead to a brutal battle between Microsoft and Google.
He said Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Series won’t kill the iPhone, which exists in a class by itself, but it will be a potential “Android killer.” Windows Phone 7 Series, Wolf said, is evidence that Microsoft “finally gets it.”

This is happening for the first time. O2 Ireland has announced that its customers will soon be able to unlock their iPhones. iPhoneAlley broke this news – Rod Coleman, head of O2’s Customer Care unit, discussed the decision surrounding the unlocking on iPhones at O2 forum, especially those who want to pass on old handsets.
In order to unlock their handsets, O2 customers must meet the following criteria:
• You must be registered on O2.ie and the O2Forum.
• Prepaid customers must have topped up with a minimum €150 on the registered SIM card (this excludes bonus credits).
• You must have bought the phone from O2 Ireland.
Coleman also added that the company is currently taking unlock requests and will submit them to Apple if customers meet the criteria for unlocking when the services becomes available.
If you are O2 Ireland iPhone customer, you need to submit your IMEI code, a process which is explained in detail on the O2 forum.
iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad betas has something real cool. Again discovered by 9to5Mac, the gestures folder contained references to two new types of commands.
In the gestures folder, you’ll see two new types of commands (3Tap.plist and LongPress.plist) that are certainly not implemented in the current 3.1 iPhone SDK.
Lets wait and see if these new gestures would come in being with the iPhone 4.0 OS.
Apple’s new iPhone patent application will bring a cool new feature called the Motion Based Input Selection. Gizmodo reported this patent detail sometime back, Apple’s patent describes a future in which iPhone users open their front doors and even pay for their next iPhone with a 3-digit pin. Many have already dubbed it the “iKey.”
Its rumored that Google’s smartphone Nexus One might be soon launched in India too. But it might be not the same as the US counterpart, but a slimmed down version. Indiatimes reported this news sometime back:
According to online reports, Google is working on an edition of Google Nexus One for the developing markets like India and Russia that is likely to lack some of the features of the version being sold in the international markets.
The Indian model’s pricing is also likely to be less vis-a-vis Nexus One’s international pricing.
