After installing so many applications and games on a jailbroken iPhone, we find that the phone isn’t functioning the way it should be. Issues with speed of the phone, crashing without any reason, speakers not working etc. starts cropping up.

I faced similar problem and at the end I wanted to restore my iPhone to the factory settings. My iPhone’s baseband firmware was v1.1.1 and I wanted to restore it back to that baseband. But iTunes wouldn’t allow me to do that. The new firmware 1.1.2 had released and everytime I hit restore in iTunes, it was trying to upgrade the baseband to 1.1.2. I just hated that.

I found a way around this and finally restored it back to 1.1.1. Here is how I did it:

  1. Go to http://iphone.unlock.no and download v.1.1.1 firmware. Its around 160mb. Store it on your desktop. (you can also download any other firmware from this website, the procedure to restore to fatory setting will remain the same.)
  2. Turn off the iPhone – Hold down the Sleep/Wake (Top) button for more than 10 seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the red slider. Ignore this step if your iPhone is already off.
restore iphone step1 How to restore iPhone to baseband firmware 1.1.1, 1.0.x or 1.1.2 without using iTunes default restore
  3. Press and hold down the Home (front bottom) button for about 10 seconds.
restore iphone step2 How to restore iPhone to baseband firmware 1.1.1, 1.0.x or 1.1.2 without using iTunes default restore
  4. Keeping the home button pressed, dock the iphone or connect it to the usb cord.
  5. Hold it for another 5-10 seconds, you will then see a USB cord and iTunes picture (see below) on iPhone. Release the home button.
restore iphone step3 How to restore iPhone to baseband firmware 1.1.1, 1.0.x or 1.1.2 without using iTunes default restore
  6. iTunes will then popup on your computer and you will get an option to restore the iphone. iTunes will prompt a message that says iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK.
  7. Don’t hit restore button or else it will installed the latest firmware version.
  8. Hold shift key on your keyboard (option button if you are using Mac) and then hit Restore button in iTunes.
  9. A browse window will popup. Choose the downloaded fireware 1.1.1 which you saved on your desktop.
  10. You iphone will be restored back to factory setting. :)
  11. You will have unlock this phone again by going to http://iphone.unlock.no. Once unlocked, hack the Simcard by installing AnySim app from installer.app.
  12. Your iPhone is all set now.

If you are still facing any issues, please feel free to comment and I will get back asap.

Referring to the latest post (item 22), i can’t seem to able to find a “refurbish” button in the ziphone 3.0 version. I do have a “bricked phone” and has been trying to fix it. I was delighted to see this post only to find that the info isn’t quite accurate. I have downloaded the ziphone 3.0 version for windows/

Who can tell me what’s wrong?

Hi Pavani, I think your iPhone has be bricked. But I am not sure. If you are in any of the Metro cities in India, please go to one of these electronics market and see if there are any iPhone restorers available. They might charge around Rs.1000 and get your phone back to life.

Or you could try this proceedure again. Make sure that you have the start itunes and connect the phone to your computer via the usb cord. And then follow these steps again:

                    1. Download Ziphone software from this address – http://www.ziphone.org/
                    2. Install ZiPhone 3.X and then launch it
                    3. Hit the “Refurbish” button. You might get pairing error. Ignore that.
                    4. Once thats done. Hit “Do it All” button.

Let me know if this works for you.

you don’t have to follow this method anymore. ZIPHONE software can be dowloaded by following the link “unlock any iPhone” on top of this website.

Just follow the steps in that page n restore/unlock any version of iphone. Even bricked iPhones can be unlocked now

                                                    Hey Tnnguyen3,
I think this is because your iPhone has a later version of 1.0.2 or above. In your case, you will have to switch off your phone and then hold home button and at the same time connect the phone to the dock or USB cord. Keep holding iphone’s home button. In 5-10 seconds, you will see the image of USB cord and iTunes on iPhone screen. You can leave the home button now.

Now, iTunes will prompt a message that says iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK.

And continue with step 7. Let me know if you are still facing this issue.

The only thing I added are applications like games and IM etc. Now it is still currently on the 1.0.2 firmware stage. How do you safely turn back to factory restore. I am trying the step above however, when holding Home button after awhile more then 10-20s still nothing show up? Can anyone here suggested what are some of the solution to this restore to factory stage.

Did you switch off the phone?
Switch off the phone by holding the home button and power button for 10 sec and you will see a slider called “switch off”. Slide that and your phone will switch off.

Once the phone is switched off, press the home button for 10-20 seconds. You will see the itunes icon and usb cord jack. Then proceed.

                                                            Hi Double Tap,
Yes your phone will go back to factory settings completely. But if you sync your iphone once before restoring, everything will be recorded in your iTunes.

The only thing you would have to do after restoring your phone would be to re-sync your iphone and iTunes will restore everything you had in the iphone. From smss to contact lists, ipod tracks, notes etc. And your phone will be restored to the previous state once again.

Hi, I have been using this awesome invention called the Apple iPhone from November 2007 and have gone nutzzz over it. Nuts to an extent that I started this blog which talks just about iPhone and nothing else.

This blog of mine has been getting tremendous response and is being followed by all kinds of mobile phone users from all over the globe. Most of the traffic comes from the US and Europe. Thank you all for making this blog a success :)
