ZIPHONE updated my firmware 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 but had few issues – Bosstool messed it up
Posted on 2008 under Software Fixes | 42 CommentsI took the bold step of updating my secure and friendly 1.1.1 firmware version to 1.1.4 last evening. I must say it was a great experience. I had to re-unlock my iPhone twice. The first time it upgraded the firmware to 1.1.4 and upgraded my iPhone. But there were many issues with the phone. Let me tell you how I did it:
- Connected my iPhone to iTunes via USB cable
- I started iTunes and updated my firmware to 1.1.4 version
- Installed & started ZiPhone GUI v2.5c
- Hit the first button in the left called “Do it all” (Unlock, Jailbreak, Activate in one click)
- All set, the phone’s version was updated to 1.1.4 and it finally restarted.
I checked the phone, made a few calls and everything seemed to be working well. I started fiddling around further. I then started discovering a few issues:
- iTunes wouldn’t open and would just crash
- Photos wouldn’t open, crash just with a second
- Camera wouldn’t store the photos
- YouTube wouldn’t open either
At the same time I started download iTunes 7.6.1.9 from Apple. While it was getting installed, I also installed quite a few apps using Installer.app in my iPhone.
- Once iTunes was upgraded to 7.6.1.9, I tried to sync my iPhone. No matter what I do, iTunes wouldn’t add the iPhone tab on its left panel. It was detecting my iPhone but wouldn’t provide me the iPhone interface.
- I searched the web and found that iTunes 7.6.1.9 isn’t working with JB 1.1.4 iPhones in few cases.
- I had to go back to my previous version of iTunes 7.6.0. Uninstalled this app and reinstalled iTunes 7.6.10
In the meanwhile, in my iPhone I added BossTool from Installer.app. And then I hit “Relocate my Applications”.
When I went back to my springboard, I saw all of my previously installed apps showing up. I had more than 7 tabs or scrolls now. All filled with apps. That’s where I realised that ZiPhone din’t remove my previously installed applications which were relocated by Bosstool. This was turning me crazy now.
I thought of re-running ZiPhone now and so that I could get back to the 1.1.4 factory setting. But I had few doubts:
- Will the previously installed applications be cleaned this time?
- Should I look for “how to format my iPhone completely” on the web?
- Or how do I clean up all my previously installed files, because this will have issues everytime I relocate my Applications using Bosstool.
Then something stuck me
. If I restore my iPhone and the Reinstall 1.1.4 firmware using iTunes and then jailbreaking it using ZiPhone it would work.
So the second time I unlocked my phone, I followed these steps and boom, everything just worked prefectly fine. My iPhone is rocking as it used to. Its just PERFECT.
Coming to how I upgraded my iPhone to 1.1.4 the second time, Here is how I did it. Just to mention, my previous version was 1.1.4.
- Connected my iPhone to the computer using the USB cord. Make sure that iTunes is on
- Started ZiPhone and click on “Click here to show advance features” button at the bottom right
- Hit “DFU Mode” button on the top right. The apple logo showed up on my iPhone
- Hit “Refurbish” (Restore lock) button on the left panel of ZiPhone software
- After 2-4 minutes, ZiPhone threw up an error called “Cannot Pair”. My iPhone was just showing some loading image at the bottom
- When back to iTunes and hit Restore my iPhone.
- Once the iPhone was restore, it stated showing the pre-activated screen. And just the emergence screen would show if I scrolled the slider.
- Now I went back to ZiPhone and Hit “Do it all” (Unlock, Jailbreak, Activate in one click)”
- Waited for 2-3 minutes and BOOM, the phone was restored back to 1.1.4 with everything in the springboard just working great.
- Restored my previously backed files using iTunes restore button.
And my iPhone is back to its original look with tons of apps, utilities and games on its springboard. Everything just looks great. There were very few apps which were not compatible with 1.1.4, but most of it (around 90%) just works fine on 1.1.4. I have added a section called “Top Native Apps” on top of this page and it lists most of the utilities, apps and games with a compatibility matrix on different versions of firmwares. I am still adding many more apps and games in this section and it should be completed in another week or so. Do it out – click here.

Hey Zachalliane,
Since your phone is hanging often, I feel that something has gone wrong with one of system files. This might be a guess though. But I am sure there is no other way to get rid of this hanging bug other than restoring your phone to 1.1.1 and then re-jailbreaking it using ZiPhone. Again, I am not sure if this would solve your problem.
So if you are happy with this state of your phone, please dont re-jailbreak your iPhone. It might be a too much of work for you. If you are happy with 1.1.1 dont do this.
But if you are not, then follow these steps. I have already mentioned this above in Vidur’s reply, let me paste these steps again:
Follow the below steps. I face similar issue and I did this:
1. Connected my iPhone to the computer using the USB cord. Make sure that iTunes is on
2. Started ZiPhone and click on “Click here to show advance features” button at the bottom right
3. Hit “DFU Mode” button on the top right. The apple logo showed up on my iPhone
4. Hit “Refurbish” (Restore lock) button on the left panel of ZiPhone software
5. After 2-4 minutes, ZiPhone threw up an error called “Cannot Pair”. My iPhone was just showing some loading image at the bottom
6. When back to iTunes and hit Restore my iPhone.
7. Once the iPhone was restore, it stated showing the pre-activated screen. And just the emergence screen would show if I scrolled the slider.
8. Now I went back to ZiPhone and Hit “Do it all” (Unlock, Jailbreak, Activate in one click)”
9. Waited for 2-3 minutes and BOOM, the phone was restored back to 1.1.4 with everything in the springboard just working great.
BTW: when I said revirginize your iPhone, I mean “Refurbish” command in ZiPhone.
hi how revirginize coz ive never done that before where wil i go and once clean up will all my download application will be gone and need to download again ….and i still have another question restoring my iphone in 1.1.4 means that upgrading or what coz i downloaded the 1.1.4 version in one of the site which is 162mb can i use that like use shift and update or is it different coz i dont want to download all my applications again i just want it to be there when i upgraded i always try but it always crashes at i thought my iphone is broken when i saw it stucks on the text letter which says need configuration i already contacted a repairman for my iphone but i dont know something happened when it goes back to the recovery mode then thats it i restored the 1.1.1 then used ziphone then im relieved thats why im afraid to touch my iphone again huhuhu …then i saw this forum and i want to do it but want to make sure thats why im asking for assistance
thanks ….
Hi zachallaine,
You will have first revirginize your iPhone. This will clean up everything lying in your phone. Once you do that, restore your phone using iTunes to 1.1.4.
Then use Ziphone and unlock it.
Dev
hi just want to asked how did u restore all the applications saved on your iphone after upgrading coz ive been trying to upgrade 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 but it always crashed so i need to go back to 1.1.1 version ive been using ibrickr and doesnt work for me …so when im restoring all the apps in my 1.1.1 all erased and gone i did run ziphone coz i need to unlocked it after but still i can see in the iphonebrowser the apps but in my iphone menu its not there
cool buddy. Congrats.
I recently bought the iPhone and it was at 1.1.2, and i couldn’t get more than 16 icons on the springboard… Thanks to this site, i build up the courage to upgrade to 1.1.4 and it was SMOOTH….
Thanks again for all the info thats posted here….
Hi Che786,
You can upgrade to 1.1.4 by using ZiPhone. You don’t to go the installer.app way. Connect your iPhone to your computer, switch on iTunes and hit upgrade iPhone to latest firmware.
Once your phone is upgraded, your phone might stop connecting to any service provider, if its a jailbroken iPhone. Dont worry. download ZiPhone and install it. Keep the phone connected to iTunes. Open ZiPhone and hit Do it all. And your iPhone will be upgraded to 1.1.4 and the modem firmware will be upgrade to the latest one.
Let me know if this works
Friends, I tried upgrading my 1.0.1 iphone to 1.1.3 usning instructions metioned in http://iphone.unlock.no/. I managed to upgrade it to 1.1.2 but the last step of upgrading to 1.1.3 using installer is not working, seems the file not available with source i.e. concieted software. Now i have 2 questions.
1. I checked and found that my iphone showing version as 1.1.2 but when i am dialling *3001#12345#* it is showing 04.04.05_G; is that a mismatch and a problem.
2. What shouid i do to upgrade to 1.1.3 without using installer as it is not working for me.
Thanks a lot in advance.
If this is the case. I would suggest re-virginising your iphone and then restore it and then upgrade it 1.1.4

Hey Vidur,
2 ways.
1. Install “Bosstool” from installer.app and hit the “Wipe iPod” button. It will clear all your music. you can re-sync again.
2. Re-unlock your iphone. This time, dont just hit “Do it Now” in ZiPhone.
10. Restored my previously backed files using iTunes restore button.
Dev
its coming under the section Others at the bottom of iTunes screen

Under other it shows 900 mb
hi Dev,
well i did the brave thing, but screwed up when everything was right. basically i ended up hitting restore after the unlock was done and now it has 900 mb of my previous music and pics in the damn phone and it doesnt get out.
how do i free this 900 mb.
please advice and thanks a ton once again
Believe me Vidur, Infact I was happy with 1.1.1 just like but we are greedy, arn’t we?
Now I am on 1.1.4 and even though there is not much of difference, I just love this one. the safari is more stable, google shows my location, that funny wiggly thing on springboard etc..:)
Go it it Vidur. ZiPhone is just too good. Its so damn simple to upgrade. Here is the easiest way to do it.
1. Upgrade your iphone to 1.1.4 through iTunes itself.
2. Download ZiPhone from this address – http://www.downloadziphone.org/
3. Hit “Just Do It” button.
Thats it.
If you face any issue while doing this, just don’t worry. you iPhone will never get bricked ever again, thanks to ZiPhone.
If this happens, follow the steps mentioned in the post and you will be done.
Dev
hi dev
thanks a ton its working.
Dev your thoughts, do i take a chance and upgrade to 1.1.4. i have a 1.1.1 phone working beautifully, but i guess there is no end to greed.
if your answer is Yes, could you also share the easiest way to do so.
Hi Vidur,
Did you try to add the source code which is mentioned in this website – http://code.google.com/p/weisms/?
This the code – URL: http://iphone.nonsoft.com/repo/
Try it out.
Dev
how do i add iSMS to my iphone, my installer.app doesnt show the file
Varun,
Try this link – http://iphoneindia.gyanin.com/2008/03/07/113-114-installer-package-download-failed-fix/
Dev
hey varun. No worries. You are on 1.1.4 ver now. The package download error happens when installer.app finds the download file missing on the server. Check out my post on package download error varun. I am right nor on my iPhone. So I won’t be able type the link to that post.
I will add it when I get to my
comp.
Dev

let me know if i need to do anyhting else
thanks once again
Hi Vidur,
Usually ZiPhone installs the installer.app on the springboard once you jailbreak. There are 2 options you have.
1. You can re-jailbreak your iphone using the same ZiPhone.
2. Easier method would be to go to http://jailbreakme.com/ and scroll down and hit “Run AppSnapp!” link. And this will add installer.app to your springboard in about 1-3mins depending on your wifi speed.
Dev…
hi,
i am currently on a jailbroken 1.1.1 but my unlocking through ziPhone does not show the installer.app logo on my screen, do i follow the same procedure as above or do i need to do anything else
Thanks a ton buddy. This info is great. Let me try n build a relevant post around managing iPhone in Macs.
Thanks again Aniel. Dev.
Tks Dev.
Will keep assisting you where ever possible. Apparently I donot have a website in place but soon maybe.
I have another excellent thing to add specially for alll those mac users.
Thos having problems with ssh can use a utillity found in network packages under the installer called AFPd server to your iphone.
It will automatically configure and show the ip of the phone.
2. On your mac on the Menu bar click on Go and connect to server.
Choose give the address as :afp://your ip of phone and click
connect. You will automatically get connect to your iphone and the finder will open giving all your files of the iphone. Voila! you can then add remove change etc any files directly from your mac.
3. In order to add this to the Boss preferences there is already a tweak in the network packages showing all preferences of Boss pref.
Cheers
Aniel
Hey Aniel,
I have mentioned your name as well in the para just before the working: list. Check it out. Do let me know if you have any website, I will link your website to your name.
Thanks again buddy.
Dev
Great. the native app list is looking good. .
You are right. But I had hit update in iTunes when I did it for the first time. I should have hit restore.
That would have made things much simpler.
But this experience was also shared in few of the posts in modmyifone.com forum also.
Check this post:
Yes Zibri has released ZiPhone 2.5 to the world. This is for full functionality on all firmware versions (iPhone only atm). He also released this to everyone at the same time instead of the initial plan of releasing to donators first. Read on for download links.

Quote:
ZiPhone 2.5 is now on download site for
you all to enjoy.
I decided to release it for everyone since MANY
are helping supporting sponsors.
And it would not have been fair to them.
I suggest you to do a restore to 1.1.4
not an update. Because installer keeps old
installed apps in it’s cache and you would have problems.
Hoping people at conceited software resolve that soon.

I guess there are lot more iPhone users like me
Hey, but thanks for your comment.
Dev
Thanks Aniel,
I have updated the Native Apps section with all these apps. Thanks for your support. I will start changing the formate to include websites and how to install in coming days. Let me know if I have missed anything.
Yes all those apps which work on 1.1.3 are also working 1.1.4. I have been testing it from this morning, since I have 1.1.4 now.
Dev
Following apps working well with 1.1.3 version. So i presume will work on 1.1.4
ContactFlow
LocateMe
Converter
iSim
Search
Rss
Books
Lockbox
iRadio with fix in 1.1.3 tweaks in packages in installer
sendFile
iSms
SwirlyMMS
mobile finder
Services
Mobile Preview
Customise dont know which version
Mobile TextEdit
MobileChat
Mobile todoList
All are fully compatible. I am trying ilog which is cool app but am not know anything about ssh and changing permissions as i donot know how to do that.
The native section is cool. Besides apps & games you can add few more things later as you proceed and also give path to the sources if any want wants to add it.
Since most of the packages listed under installer are out dated.
One of the best app to get is wetool which is not yest working on 1.1.3
Aniel
Dev
You went through a lot of long procedure.
You should have straight away clicked on restore in itunes and then used the ziphone tool or if u are on mac used independence. All would have been back to normal 1.1.4.
I am still on 1.1.3 and decided to keep it that way till full confirm reports of 1.1.4 is there b4 i upgrade. Let us know how all is going with 1.1.4.
