Thanks to mmlp86 from Hachint0sh, here is how to use your iPhone as a modem for a Mac machine. I guess this would be helpful while you are travelling and would want to use your EDGE connectivity on a bigger screen.

  1. Install the program called Tinyproxy – Download it from here.
  2. On your OS X laptop (you will need an airport card), Open up System Preferences from the Apple Menu and navigate to the Sharing tab.
  3. Click on the internet tab once in there. Select share your connection from Built in Ethernet. Then select airport as your method of sharing. Under airport options you can name and secure your computer in the manner you prefer. then click on “start” under internet sharing.
  4. Head back over to system preferences and open up Network settings. Its best to create a new location for this but you really dont have to. Select airport off the list and hit the TCP/IP Tab.
  5. Configure IPv4 Manually and set your IP to “192.168.1.2″ and your subnet to “255.255.255.0″, you can leave all the other fields blank.
  6. Click on configure IPv6 and set it off.
  7. Now click on the proxies tab and turn on your Web Proxy, to the right of that you will enter your web proxy address enter “192.168.1.1:8080″
  8. Hit Apply Now
  9. Back on the iPhone navigate to the settings menu then to the wifi menu. From here select your newly created network. Then press that little blue arrow to the right of the network name
  10. Go to the airport on the mac toolbar on the top and select “create network” and name what you want and create a password if u want too.
  11. Back on the iPhone navigate to the settings menu then to the wifi menu. From here select your newly created network. Then press that little blue arrow to the right of the network name
  12. Click on the static tab and Change the IP Address to Manually and enter “192.168.1.1″ in the IP field and “255.255.255.0″ in the subnet field. Leave everything else blank.
If u followed all of this right its gonna work on safari…..for firefox do the following after done the previous steps:
  13.  Go to Preferences
  14. Click on the “advanced” tab
  15. Click on the “Network” tab
  16. Click on settings under connection
  17. Select “Manual Proxy configuration”
  18. Type in 192.168.1.1 in the http proxy box and 8080 for port and leave everything else blank or the way it is.
  19. Select Socksv4
  20. Hit ok

I tried this with” Wireless Modem” app for Treo 600 for Mac OS X, it didn’t work with T-mobile, only Sprint/Verizon, there was supposed to be a generic GPRS modem script that would get Wireless Modem working using T mobile, but I never had any success. I eagerly waited for the first iPhones thinking Apple would have this built in, but alas it never happened. If I can’t have a straight forward app without getting into a bunch of settings that may work if I’m lucky but usually don’t then why bother. I’m buying a new Blackberry just for the included mobile cellular modem function, cables even come with the phone just for the modem app. And one LESS thing! Apple could have sold me a phone to match my iBook but they don’t see cell modems as a market I guess.

Yes, for tethering to work you will NetShare app from appstore. This app was banned long time back. Without NetShare, you will have jailbreak your iPhone 3G. Which is not advisable.
You could check with you carrier if tethering is possible directly.

So, Let me get this right. For the New iphone 3G we can’t have this feature? How about if you have it with Mexican carrier, Telcel? I was told it could work like a modem for my MacBook Pro so I could connect from anywhere, is this true? Thanks.

Nope… There was this app called NetShare which allowed iPhone Laptop tethering and was launched last month in AppStore. Apple banned this app within 2 days. And this app never came back. AT&T would not allow this feature and Apple will lose revenue.
Lets wait and see if Apple allows these kind of apps in the future. Just last week, Apple allowed a VoIP app called Fring to appear on AppStore. This was a big no no few weeks back. So Apple might change its strategies in the future, I guess.

Any chance of something similar for the NEW iPhone 3G?
                    Thanks

I guess so. But if you are in India, you can use Airtel’s unlimited weekly plan which costs just Rs. 140 ($3.5). And the speed is pretty good as well.

I knew this. But it would be way too expensive to use your Edge for data transfer unless its a great emergency. Wifi solves most of the purpose.

                                :)
