I tried this with" Wireless Modem" app for Treo 600 for Mac OS X, it didn't work with T-mobile, only Sprint/Verizon, there was supposed to be a generic GPRS modem script that would get Wireless Modem working using T mobile, but I never had any success. I eagerly waited for the first iPhones thinking Apple would have this built in, but alas it never happened. If I can't have a straight forward app without getting into a bunch of settings that may work if I'm lucky but usually don't then why bother. I'm buying a new Blackberry just for the included mobile cellular modem function, cables even come with the phone just for the modem app. And one LESS thing! Apple could have sold me a phone to match my iBook but they don't see cell modems as a market I guess.

Yes, for tethering to work you will NetShare app from appstore. This app was banned long time back. Without NetShare, you will have jailbreak your iPhone 3G. Which is not advisable.
You could check with you carrier if tethering is possible directly.

So, Let me get this right. For the New iphone 3G we can't have this feature? How about if you have it with Mexican carrier, Telcel? I was told it could work like a modem for my MacBook Pro so I could connect from anywhere, is this true? Thanks.

Nope... There was this app called NetShare which allowed iPhone Laptop tethering and was launched last month in AppStore. Apple banned this app within 2 days. And this app never came back. AT&T would not allow this feature and Apple will lose revenue.
Lets wait and see if Apple allows these kind of apps in the future. Just last week, Apple allowed a VoIP app called Fring to appear on AppStore. This was a big no no few weeks back. So Apple might change its strategies in the future, I guess.
