iPhone 3.0 Quick Update: MMS and Tethering is working on Airtel, India
Posted on 2009 under Firmware Versions | 72 CommentsAWESOME. I just started testing this 3.0 OS on my iPhone 3G. Its response time is definitely faster. The Spotlight works damn well. I just MMS’ed, it works beautifully with my Airtel SIM. Too cool. Let me quickly share this MMS screenshot:
Tethering works on Airtel as well. Smooth
). I can now tether my iPhone 3G with my Laptop using the same Airtel connection. And the best thing about these great features is that I dont have to pay even a single paisa (penny) to Airtel
. No extra charges for MMS and nothing for Tethering. But I will be paying for the data download. BTW, here is my iPhone-Dell Laptop tethering screenshot:
Its very simple to activate iPhone tethering. Go to your iPhone > Setting > General > Network and switch on iPhone tethering. You can choose either Bluetooth or USB connectivity. Once this is done pair your iPhone with your Laptop via bluetooth or just connect the USB cable. You are done. iPhone was start tethering within 10-30 seconds. And you will be able surf using iPhones EDGE/3G connection
. AWESOME!!!
Thanks Airtel, you guys are just awesome. Much much better than those AT&T guys in the US. Sorry AT&T.
Let me now explore this 3.0 OS…. Will get soon.. Namaste!!!

by saad, on June 18 2009 @ 1:55 pm
hey dev that means the tethering charges are covered in the 500mb data we get every month for free,
by Arun, on June 18 2009 @ 2:06 pm
hey you do have a MB limit on your connection. Even if tethering work you will be heavy charged after your puny MB limit get over…?????
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 2:24 pm
Hey saad.. I am running on a 500mb/mo mode currently. This offer will expire in August. But there is no tethering charges from Airtel, you will be charged per MB if it exceeds 500mb per month. I am not going to be using this feature often. Only when I am on the move, I might use this feature. Most of the time my iphone replaces my laptop when I am on the move. iPhone can do everything what a laptop or a netbook can do I believe.
Once this 500mb offer expires in Aug, I will move to Rs.580/mo (US$12/mo) unlimited data bandwidth mode with Airtel.
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 2:25 pm
Yes Arun, I have a 500mb/mo limit. Since I wont be using this tethering feature much, I dont have to worry.
by uday, on June 18 2009 @ 2:31 pm
I just checked again but the Indian iTunes store still says the item is unavailable for download (3.0 upgrade), how did you manage?
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 3:08 pm
Uday, you will have to connect your iPhone to iTunes and hit the Check for Update button. This OS 3.0 is not available in App Store.
by Gaurav, on June 18 2009 @ 3:53 pm
Hey does anyone have an idea abt the vodafone MMS & Tethering thing ??
I had checked the MMS thing in the morning but there was no option whatsoever.
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 4:12 pm
Hey Gaurav, the MMS option in iPhone 3.0 OS is inbuilt. Just hit the messages icon. Choose to send an message and you will see a camera icon before the text field and send button. When you hit that camera icon you can take a photo and MMS it to anyone.
You will have to just activate MMS service from your Vodafone service provider.
Since its there in Airtel, I am sure this will be present in Vodafone as well.
by Gaurav, on June 18 2009 @ 4:19 pm
I tried to send a MMS from the send message option but that was not happening.
Moreover i read this on the apple website
In Settings, tap Messages, then tap MMS Messaging to turn it on or off. You may want to turn MMS Messaging off, for example, to prevent sending or receiving attachments when fees apply.
NOTE: The MMS Messaging setting doesn’t appear if MMS isn’t supported by your carrier.
So thats what is happening there is no option to switch MMS on/off.
I’ll speak to a vodafone executive and check later on.
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 4:31 pm
Cool.. I dint know that.. yes check with your cust rep and ask them to activate MMS.
by Zeeshan, on June 18 2009 @ 4:44 pm
Hi there, i have tried to send MMS thru my Airtel Iphone 3g 16 GB but it always come as Failed!

Spoke with Airtel CC again, they said its activated from their end, it says failed still, Dev, how did u get it to work? are there any settings that you configured?
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 5:07 pm
I think you will have to Download AP news or BeeJive or Tap Tap Revenge. Once you download one of these kind of apps, Push Notification will be featured in Settings > App Name.
But I am not too sure.
Let me check it and get back
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 5:08 pm
Rohit, download AP news or BeeJive or Tap Tap Revenge and you would get the Push notication option.
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 5:09 pm
Strange, its working on my iPhone and I have Airtel. Did you activate MMS by getting into settings > messages > activate MMS?
by Zeeshan, on June 18 2009 @ 5:19 pm
thats what i did and got a Camera icon for attaching pics it starts sending but eventually fails, check with Customer care and they are not updated with the info for iPhone 3G
also i dont have the option of Cellular Data Network under Setting>Network
by Pronojit Saha, on June 18 2009 @ 5:20 pm

Did you activated MMS in settings?
by Dev, on June 18 2009 @ 5:34 pm
Hey Rohit, I downloaded AP News and the Push Notification feature comes with this App. When I started the app, I was asked if I need push? And I said yes.
I have started getting news automatically now.

by rohit, on June 18 2009 @ 8:19 pm
SRY MMS NOT SMS
by Boltress, on June 18 2009 @ 9:32 pm
That is the problem I also faced but after calling Cust. Service and asking them to enable MMS for my account, it started working properly. I recommend you talk with cust. service.
by Boltress, on June 18 2009 @ 9:33 pm
Are you sure you have updated to 3.0 Firmware? This feature is only available on 3.0 SW update.
by Boltress, on June 18 2009 @ 9:34 pm
And the MMS size can’t be more than 150KB.
by brutus, on June 18 2009 @ 9:45 pm

by chintan, on June 19 2009 @ 10:29 pm
well pals can anyone tell me if i get an iphone 3gs from us will it work in india after unlockin using yellow snow
by ImNoSuperMan, on June 20 2009 @ 12:49 am
Not yet. Dev team has not even started with the 3GS. It`d definitely be a while before they find some loop hole and break into it. This loophole could be found in couple of day, or months. No one can know for sure. Dont count on it being unlocked very soon.IIRC the updated 3G iPhones last year took more than 3-4 months before they were unlocked again. And even then the unlock was not 100% perfect. So wait for any news of 3GS being unlocked before shelling out the cash.

I am using AirTel in Mumbai with unlimited data plan. Upgraded to 3.0 and no Tethering option!
Any idea?
by Ajay, on June 20 2009 @ 6:05 am
Can I upgrade my hacktivated iPhone to OS3.
I am on Airtel. Will there be any problems like locking?
by Dev, on June 20 2009 @ 11:07 am
It looks like you are on a unlocked iPhone. You got to wait for another 1-2 weeks and http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ will launch the quickPWN and Ultrasn0w tools that will unlock iPhone OS 3.0. You can then upgrade your iphone.
by Dev, on June 20 2009 @ 11:09 am
Strange, this option works like a charm with Airtel. Make sure that your network neighborhood has the right settings.
Switch on tethering in your iPhone and then connect it your laptop. Now open network neighborhood and look for a new lan connection. Check that settings and then it will work.
by Gaurav, on June 20 2009 @ 12:20 pm
Hey can some pls help me to solve a problem i m facing??

by Sandeep Asrani, on June 21 2009 @ 9:29 am
Hey I am on vodafone India …. Tethering worked like a charm on my iPhone but only after restarting. But MMS no luck can you’ll guys help me. Do I need to edit the ipcc
by Sandeep Asrani, on June 21 2009 @ 4:17 pm
Please Help me….
by Dev, on June 22 2009 @ 10:02 am
Hey sandeep.. sorry,it was weekend.. couldnt reply back.
in iPhone 3G you cant edit any MMS settings.. You can only ask your provider to switch it on. Once thats done, activate MMS from your iPhone settings.
If thats not working, vodafone will have to do something, you cant do much.
by Mohan, on June 22 2009 @ 12:42 pm
Hi
I am using iPhone 2G with 2.1 Firmware + Airtel.
Can I upgrade my iPhone to OS 3.0 and use airtel? Pleas tell me..
If upgraded? can I unlock..
Please specify the link or the procedure to upgrade and unlock
thanks in advance
by Dev, on June 22 2009 @ 12:47 pm
Yes you can. But you will have to wait for another week or 2 for iPhoneDevTeam to release the latest version of quickPWN and Ultrasn0w.
Keep checking http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ for the complete procedure
by Mohan, on June 22 2009 @ 12:54 pm
so I cant unlock as of now ? right ?
by Mohan, on June 22 2009 @ 1:11 pm
http://www.fonearena.com/blog/2009/06/14/howto-upgrade-to-iphone-30-on-your-unlocked-iphone.html
please check this
by Dev, on June 22 2009 @ 1:34 pm
Thanks for this info Mohan.
by Mohan, on June 22 2009 @ 1:40 pm
hey tell me.. what should i do now.. Wait for the Quick Pwn tool to unlock ?
with OS 3.0.,, hehe
I need my iphone 2g to work with Airtel
by Dev, on June 22 2009 @ 1:44 pm
@ mohan. This method listed under fonearena is good, but if mess it up, your iPhone might get bricked.
I just found out that redsn0w app can do the same – unlock 2G iPhones. Try that. check this link I just posted – http://iphoneindia.gyanin.com/2009/06/22/redsn0w-universal-iphone-30-jailbreaking-tool-for-windows-and-mac-download-now/.
by Mohan, on June 22 2009 @ 1:54 pm
what would you say ? Iam interested in updating to OS3.0 and use it with Airtel.
There won’t be any problem right.. like brick.
..
so to unlock.. i need to use redsn0w..
by Dev, on June 22 2009 @ 2:33 pm
redsn0w is used for both jailbreaking and unlocking iPhone 2G. But if one is on 3G, he can only jailbreak.
Yes, I think you should give it a try. iPhoneDevTeam’s apps are pretty good.
But dont blame me if something goes wrong
by Mohan, on June 22 2009 @ 2:38 pm
So a normal update to OS 3.0 from 2.1…
Then unlock and jailbreak using redsn0w..
if everything is fine.. I will post the procedure in my blog
by Dev, on June 22 2009 @ 3:02 pm
Don’t update to OS 3.0 first. Download redsn0w and the follow the instructions.
by Janus, on June 24 2009 @ 12:29 am
Arrgh I’m on Vodafone and push alerts, MMS, tethering all not working for me.
by rajat, on June 26 2009 @ 6:36 pm
I just upgraded my Iphone 2G from 2.2.1 to 3.0.
Everything is working fine only Edge is not working — can someone help me in solving this problem. Although “E” sign appear on the top next to Vodafone IN
by Dev, on June 26 2009 @ 10:08 pm
was it working with 2.2.1?
by rajat, on June 26 2009 @ 10:35 pm
yes , perfectly.
by rajat, on June 26 2009 @ 10:37 pm
It say “could not activate cellular data networkL yyou are not subscribe to a cellular data service”
by Dev, on June 26 2009 @ 10:44 pm
You might have to ask vodafone to activate edge especially for iPhone 3g.
by rajat, on June 26 2009 @ 10:50 pm
Dev, I have Iphone 2G (brought 1.5 years back). Data plan from vodafone is already active as I was using till today evening when I upgrade my phone to OS 3.0. In case you know process to downgrade phone back to 2.2.1 – please let me know. As email are most important for me than upgrade.
by Dev, on June 27 2009 @ 11:07 am
I dont think anyone has yet tried to downgrade to 2.2.1 from 3.0. I searched but couldnt get any one, rajat
by Dev, on June 29 2009 @ 5:22 pm
Hey Rajat. I found this thread on Macrumors
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=670322
Ok, I’ve finally figured this out. This HAS to be done on a PC. I’ve tried it a million and a half times on a mac. And it doesn’t work.
Ok, first if you’ve upgraded to 3.0 and you’re stuck -
1 – find a pc you can use
2 – plug your iphone into the computer via usb
3 – turn the iphone off
4 – put into DFU mode by holding down home and power for 10 seconds exactly, then release power and keep holding home until your pc starts making some noises. it might say down at the bottom of the screen, llike new hardware, apple iphone DFU, something like that. you know you’ve put into DFU mode correctly when the iphone looks like its off, and in itunes, all it should say is iphone in recovery mode. and the only thing you should see is iPhone. everything else should say n/a.
5 – make sure you’ve downloaded the iphone software 2.2. shift click on restore, go find the 2.2 ipsw file and click open.
6 – itunes should say its restoring blah blah blah. it should come back with an error code of 1013. this is what you want. (if you get a 1604 code or something like that, go back and redo the whole thing over again, you havent gotten it into dfu correctly)
7 – make sure you’ve downloaded quickpwn. close itunes after the error code. open up quickpwn 2.2.5. ou should get a message asking you to reset the iphone by holding down the power and home buttons for 15 seconds, then release home and continue holding power for 2 more seconds. do so. once you’ve done that, dont jailbreak it. it won’t work. open up itunes, and your iphone should be activated.
8- dont upgrade to 2.2.1, it will go back to the plug into itunes symbol. just wait 8 days until iphone 3.0 is released and upgrade to that.
good luck hope this helps!
if you’ve tried downgrading to 2.2, or 2.2.1 you are going to have to re upgrade to 3.0 to follow the above steps. make sure you put into dfu to upgrade to 3.0.
by Mohan, on June 30 2009 @ 2:30 pm

Yes… Neeru is right. Looks like your SIM is having some issue. Ask for a replacement from Airtel.
