iPhone 3.0 Quick Update: MMS and Tethering is working on Airtel, India
Posted on 2009 under Firmware Versions | 72 CommentsAWESOME. I just started testing this 3.0 OS on my iPhone 3G. Its response time is definitely faster. The Spotlight works damn well. I just MMS’ed, it works beautifully with my Airtel SIM. Too cool. Let me quickly share this MMS screenshot:
Tethering works on Airtel as well. Smooth
). I can now tether my iPhone 3G with my Laptop using the same Airtel connection. And the best thing about these great features is that I dont have to pay even a single paisa (penny) to Airtel
. No extra charges for MMS and nothing for Tethering. But I will be paying for the data download. BTW, here is my iPhone-Dell Laptop tethering screenshot:
Its very simple to activate iPhone tethering. Go to your iPhone > Setting > General > Network and switch on iPhone tethering. You can choose either Bluetooth or USB connectivity. Once this is done pair your iPhone with your Laptop via bluetooth or just connect the USB cable. You are done. iPhone was start tethering within 10-30 seconds. And you will be able surf using iPhones EDGE/3G connection
. AWESOME!!!
Thanks Airtel, you guys are just awesome. Much much better than those AT&T guys in the US. Sorry AT&T.
Let me now explore this 3.0 OS…. Will get soon.. Namaste!!!

And the MMS size can’t be more than 150KB.
Are you sure you have updated to 3.0 Firmware? This feature is only available on 3.0 SW update.
That is the problem I also faced but after calling Cust. Service and asking them to enable MMS for my account, it started working properly. I recommend you talk with cust. service.
SRY MMS NOT SMS
sms will cost 5 rs and will only be able to send on airtel network source AIRTEL …….
I downloaded Beejive but it did not show teh Notifications field!
Hi there,
I have iphone 3G 8GB on AIRTEL.
As told earlier regarding tethering, I do not have the IPHONE > SETTINGS > GENERAL > NETWORK > “Tethering” option.
Its not present. Please HELP.
Mean while I have MMS working.
i had teh same problem, once actgivate and deactivate the MMS option and try resending it, thats what worked for me.
hey do fring works on Push ?
Hey Rohit, I downloaded AP News and the Push Notification feature comes with this App. When I started the app, I was asked if I need push? And I said yes.
I have started getting news automatically now.
Did you activated MMS in settings?
Hey even i have airtel iPhone 16GB model. Tried to send MMS today morning but it came sending failed. Called Airtel they say MMS activated from their end.
I asked them to send the settings again, they tried to send but then said that Iphone doesnt allow automatic setting acceptance for MMS. So still no luck.
Any suggestions??
thats what i did and got a Camera icon for attaching pics it starts sending but eventually fails, check with Customer care and they are not updated with the info for iPhone 3G
also i dont have the option of Cellular Data Network under Setting>Network
Strange, its working on my iPhone and I have Airtel. Did you activate MMS by getting into settings > messages > activate MMS?
Rohit, download AP news or BeeJive or Tap Tap Revenge and you would get the Push notication option.
I think you will have to Download AP news or BeeJive or Tap Tap Revenge. Once you download one of these kind of apps, Push Notification will be featured in Settings > App Name.
But I am not too sure.
Let me check it and get back
Spoke with Airtel CC again, they said its activated from their end, it says failed still, Dev, how did u get it to work? are there any settings that you configured?
everything else works but how will push work ???? OS is sexyyy
how to activate push notification ? please help
Hi there, i have tried to send MMS thru my Airtel Iphone 3g 16 GB but it always come as Failed!
I checked with Airtel CC and they said that MMS service is activated from their end.
How did u get MMS to work?
Cool.. I dint know that.. yes check with your cust rep and ask them to activate MMS.
I tried to send a MMS from the send message option but that was not happening.
Moreover i read this on the apple website
In Settings, tap Messages, then tap MMS Messaging to turn it on or off. You may want to turn MMS Messaging off, for example, to prevent sending or receiving attachments when fees apply.
NOTE: The MMS Messaging setting doesn’t appear if MMS isn’t supported by your carrier.
So thats what is happening there is no option to switch MMS on/off.
I’ll speak to a vodafone executive and check later on.
Hey Gaurav, the MMS option in iPhone 3.0 OS is inbuilt. Just hit the messages icon. Choose to send an message and you will see a camera icon before the text field and send button. When you hit that camera icon you can take a photo and MMS it to anyone.
You will have to just activate MMS service from your Vodafone service provider.
Since its there in Airtel, I am sure this will be present in Vodafone as well.
Hey does anyone have an idea abt the vodafone MMS & Tethering thing ??
I had checked the MMS thing in the morning but there was no option whatsoever.
Uday, you will have to connect your iPhone to iTunes and hit the Check for Update button. This OS 3.0 is not available in App Store.
I just checked again but the Indian iTunes store still says the item is unavailable for download (3.0 upgrade), how did you manage?
Yes Arun, I have a 500mb/mo limit. Since I wont be using this tethering feature much, I dont have to worry.
Hey saad.. I am running on a 500mb/mo mode currently. This offer will expire in August. But there is no tethering charges from Airtel, you will be charged per MB if it exceeds 500mb per month. I am not going to be using this feature often. Only when I am on the move, I might use this feature. Most of the time my iphone replaces my laptop when I am on the move. iPhone can do everything what a laptop or a netbook can do I believe.
Once this 500mb offer expires in Aug, I will move to Rs.580/mo (US$12/mo) unlimited data bandwidth mode with Airtel.
hey you do have a MB limit on your connection. Even if tethering work you will be heavy charged after your puny MB limit get over…?????
hey dev that means the tethering charges are covered in the 500mb data we get every month for free,
