DOOM Resurrection was launched yesterday and looks like the whole iPhone world is going GAGA over this game. Developed by id Software, this game is the iPhone version of the original Doom game. Coming to this review, usually Kittu Dhanoa from our forum does a detailed review of interesting games that get launched on App Store. Hey, I would like to thank Kittu for these awesome reviews. Kittu will be reviewing this game very soon. In the meanwhile, Vikas, another dedicated member of our forum has just written an awesome and casual review about DOOM Resurrection. Thanks buddy :) . DOOM Resurrection – $9.99 [App Store]

In one simple word the game is Fan-DOOM-Tastic. Ok that wasnt one word. But pretty much sums up the marvelous game. Id has done 100% justice to the series. There couldnt be anything more I could ask from an iPhone port of doom(ok maybe multiplayer and those half clad girls in the original game Grin). I was skeptical about the game as I hadnt read anything about the control scheme. In fact I had assumed it`ll be using an onscreen D-Pad/joystics like the rest of FPS games on iPhone. I hate these d-pads on any iPhone game but still play them as there is no option other than not getting the game in the first place(which is is not really an option either as so many great games are coming out for iPhone. Cant resist at all).

doom iphone DOOM Resurrection Unoffficial Review

Doom Resurrection completely blew me over with its “Shooter On Rails” control scheme. FPS purists may find it a significant downgrade from the free view FPS games available on PC and consoles and would have preferred the same on iPhone. But Id, fortunately, disagreed and came up with a far far better solution for the iPhone version of Doom. They took away all the hard(and frustrating) part of an iPhone FPS away and gave us a complete entertainer, a Masala game meant purely for your monster shooting desires. There is no need to look up/down, move left/right, going back n forth to search for a key to a door or anything. All you need to do is aim at the zombies and shoot. Bang bang bang, rat-a-tat-a-tat, dichkiyaon dichkiyaon , BOOOOM…. Thats DOOM.

Your player will move automatically in the game as if he was sitting in a car driven by somebody else stopping only when the zombies show up. Kill them and it moves ahead only to be encountered by more zombies. You aim at them using the accelerometer and shoot by touching the “shoot” button on the bottom right of the screen. You can never run out of ammo as your your basic machine gun has infinite ammo. Also you can pick up more powerful guns and their ammo during the course of the game which do a lot more damage. But even with the machine gun you can do a good deal of damage if you take head shots. There are various check points at regular intervals in case the monsters kill you. On the top right of the screen is the reload button. On the bottom left is the Dodge/cover button which is used only when there is a zombie out there with a gun or missiles. This all may seem simple but the game will definitely keep you on your Finger Toes(did I just make up a body part out of thin air Shocked. Watever, you got the point na). All in all I m pleasantly surprised and extremely satisfied with the control scheme and the overall gameplay for Doom Resurrection.

But you are not killing these zombies for nothing. There is a story going on here which unfolds with quite a few in game cut scenes. You are accompanied by a cute and hilarious floating robot head which also works as your communication device. It`ll keep you entertained while also giving you a break from killing the bad guys so that the game doesnt get monotonous. The basic aim of the game seems to be to make you feel like an action hero in a hollywood movie with lots n lots of non stop action. I have been playing the game for about an hour only but I strongly believe I`ll be playing this even after I finish the game. Killing those monsters is the best time pass I can think of on the iPhone for now(and I have tons of other games on mine, Sorry beloved games, maybe later, much much later Tongue). You can also pick up any chapter you`ve unlocked in the game and start shooting the hell out of the bad guys.

There are quite a few different types of zombies in the game. From the regular zombie, to the Fat zombie which start chewing up on u if it gets too close(forcing you to shake the iPhone to get him off of you, making you loose aim and start shooting everywhere like a mad man). Then there are other scary looking zombies shooting missiles at you, forcing you to hit the dodge button with careful timing while still trying to shoot him down before he launches another missile. The fourth zombie is more human like and uses a machine gun. He shoots at you for some time, takes cover and then shoots you again until you blow the hell out of him. You, also have to take cover before his aim gets accurate enough to hit you. His aim is shown as a shrinking yellow circle. Once it gets really small, it`ll turn red meaning the zombies bullets are now going to pierce your body for sure. There are definitely more interesting zombies here which you`ll be encountering as you progress further in the game.

Oh. Completely forgot about the grafix. This is definitely one of the best looking 3D iPhone game. The game runs extremely well and it didnt slow down even once on my 2G iPhone.

If you think 10$ is too much for an iPhone game and it`ll go down in a month or two, you may be right. But IMHO the game is well worth the price. Get it now if you can afford spending 10 bucks. In case you cant please tell me where did you steal the iPhone you are using, from Tongue. Seriously if you have even a passing interest in Doom and other FPS games, then get it for sure. If you still cant justify the cost, then wait for a price drop and get it as soon as that happens. The game is very entertaining and not the one to be missed. I cant even imagine how the hell I played that resident evil game with the stupid touchscreen d-pad.

Too much typing. Gotta get back to my DOOM. here I come you monster. Rat a tat a tat, dichkiyaon, boooooooom

DOOM.

Best.iPhone.Game.Ever.IMHO.

Actually the whole “on rails” part makes me WANT to play it more, I think that's the best approach to making an FPS on the iPhone. Otherwise it's just insanely hard to control and clunky, me thinks.
