Google formally lauched Latitude for iPhone last evening. But may expected Latitude to come to iPhone as a native app instead of a web app. If you go through the Google Mobile’s post of Latitude launch, you will notice that Google made an admission about this service that it had apparently build a native iPhone app for Latitude, but Apple asked it to make it a web app. TechCrunch dug this bit of info. Here is the official word:

We worked closely with Apple to bring Latitude to the iPhone in a way Apple thought would be best for iPhone users. After we developed a Latitude application for the iPhone, Apple requested we release Latitude as a web application in order to avoid confusion with Maps on the iPhone, which uses Google to serve maps tiles.
