FixThis: BlackRa1n stuck at the “Running…” Screen? [UPDATE]
Posted on 2009 under Firmware Versions, GeoHot, Unlock-JailBreak iPhone | 20 CommentsBeen getting quite a few mails from iPhone users who are trying to jailbreak 3.1.2 firmware using Blackra1n. Users are getting stuck on “running…” stage and iPhone would stay in the Recovery Mode. If you are facing this issue, dont worry try this:
- Unplug your iPhone from your computer.
- Restart your iPhone by holding Power and Home buttons for over 10-12 seconds
- Make sure that the blackra1n.exe is running from your C:/ (Copy and Paste it onto C: root)
- Check Task Manager for any iTunes processes running close them all (Ctr+Alt+Delete and run taskmgr.exe)
- Right Click Blackra1n.exe and under Properties change to “Run in Compatibility Mode” and choose Windows XP. Then Run BlackRa1n.exe as Administrator.
Make sure that when you are running Blackra1n, non of iTunes processes are active. iTunes shouldnt launch, if that happens Blackra1n wont work.
Cheers!!!
UPDATE: Found this important troubleshooting tip at CydiaUpdate.
Step 0. Ensure that within iTunes you have unchecked “Sync Automatically” and under Edit -> Preferences, Devices, choose Prevent iTunes from syncing with Devices Automatically.
1. Ensure that your iPhone is on. You can see your Springboard. Plug your iPhone into your computer and ensure that iTunes recognizes it and preform a sync/backup/update.
2. Once you have completed this, close iTunes completely. Press the start button and choose Run. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and check your task manager to ensure that any iTunes processes are closed, such as iPodService.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, etc. These must be turned off.
3. Ensure that your copy of blackra1n.exe is located in C:\blackra1n.exe.
4. Right click blackra1n.exe. If running Windows 7 choose properties, and then compatibility. Choose to run in Windows XP SP3 Mode.
5. Right Click blackra1n.exe and choose Run As. Chose the Administrator account and enter in the password.
6. Once blackra1n.exe is running, click Make it Ra1n.
7. You should see your iPhone automatically reboot and show a usb cable and iTunes, your typical restore/dfu screen.
8. You should see blackra1n.exe change to Running.. and GeoHotz face will appear on your iPhone. It will automatically reboot when done and that is when you should see the “Jailbreaking complete” dialog that likes to appear when you manually restart after no response.
I hope this helps a bit more. If I missed something I will try and squeeze it in right away.
Here is a video put together from David @ iPhoneDesignz. Glad my steps could help :p

UPDATE 2: If none of the above steps work, Try this (Someone name J0sh did it this way)

This is what I did for iphone 3g, win7. Put blackra1n in c://
kill ituneshelper.exe
leave everything else as is. Turn off your phone. run blackra1n as admin, nothing else. Click make it rain. Then hold down both the power and home keys. When you see the apple logo release the power key, keep holding home till you see geo’s face. Let it do its thing.
I’m not sure if this actually fixed anything, or if anyone else’s voodoo is doing something or if occasionally it just works and then people post what they did and everyone thinks its a clue.
Just another method for you to try, its what worked for me after trying 20+ different things and multiple attempts at each.
Good luck, I think that and persistence are the key things needed to make this work.

The new Blackra1n can easily be installed on Mac. You new to go to http://www.blackra1n.com and download the mac verion and run it.
You can also follow the instructions posted on this page http://iphoneindia.gyanin.com/unlock-iphone-now/
Can anybody post a version of this procedure for Mac users?
You will have to restore your iPhone, Kevin. Connect your iphone to your computer and start iTunes. If iTunes detects your iphone, you can hit the Restore button and your phone will be restored.
But if iTunes cant find your iphone, you will have push your iPhone into DFU mode and then restore it. Here is how to push your iPhone into DFU mode http://iphoneindia.gyanin.com/2008/07/21/how-to...
I have a iphone 3gs. When I started Blackra1n, it went into recovery mode and this image of a guy show up. But then I accidently plug out the usb cable during the process and now the image of the guy is stuck there forever. I can't reboot or power off. Basically, I can't do anything to get my phone working again. Please can anyone help me? Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing these steps Poizhan.. I am sure this will be helpful big time.
- Download and keep BlackRa1n.exe in your C:
- Right click on BlackRa1n.exe –> properties–> Compatibility -> check the run this program in compatibility mode for… XP and also check the Run as admin option.
- Upgrade to 3.1.2 and restore with your latest back up(sync contacts etc etc)
- Close itunes
- Go to control panel (classic view)-> User Accounts ->Manage another account -> Create new account -> Select Administrator option and create a new account
- Click on the newly created account and select Create password to set a password.
- Shutdown your system
- Boot your system
- Login with your new admin account
- Let the windows complete setting up your desktop
- Now connect your iphone via usb
- Right click on BlackRa1n.exe and run as admin ( though already set to run as admin in properties, just making sure.. this is what i did)
- Click on 'Make it Ra1n”
- Sit back and relax.. (you have to click on a lengthy message from BlacRa1n during the process to say 'OK' ) GeoHot screen will appear and reboot ur iphone.. after that its all simple.. check ur iphone for blackra1n app..
The blackra1n executable process hangs when iTunes detects the iphone in dfu mode and will open trying to restore it. But during the last step itunes will try to open.. but because of new user, it will get stuck on license agreement page..

Correct… I am sure Dev-Team will come up with Redsn0w for windows very soon.
Right guys – there are lots of supposed 'guides' out there telling you how to do it…forget them. Blackra1n is random – most times it fails, but occasionally it will work. I repeated the EXACT same method about 15 times, until it worked. I did nothing different whatsoever.
It doesn't make sense…but those are the facts. What I would suggest is (assuming you are patient enough with this buggy program), try someone's guide 15 times. If it doesn't work, try someone else's guide 15 times…etc. Eventually you will either succeed or end up downgrading, or waiting for a better jailbreak release.

if your having problems like your iphone 3g getting stuck on the itunes load screen ..1st thing take your blackra1n out of xp2 compadibility…run blackra1n it should crash but you will be able to restart your iphone…have itunes program running without sync… rerun blackra1n while holding the home and power buttons…for some reason after about 50 times.. and actually jailbreaking someone elses 3g 1st…this is what worked for me….
Awesome Seek… Thankfully from now on we will have 2 developers trying to crack iPhone firmware… Dev-Team and GeoHot. Good for all of us
In fact, that was the second iphone I tried to jailbreak. The previous one was a 3.1 3Gs and worked fine in the first try… :S, seems to me like problems are a little bit random…
Awesome.. Congrats Seek.. I seriously believe that GeoHot should come with better version of Blackra1n.. Everyone seems to be getting it only after 5-10 tries..
After 10+ tries, I finally did it by restoring a clean 3.1.2 firmware on my 3G, and running blackra1n BEFORE restoring the data (clean restore).
Worked like a charm!
Awesome, Gary.. I have been asking GeoHot to come up with a better version of blackra1n. But he doesnt have time..
Good that you finally made it
So follow the guide and hope for luck or use davids script and away you go!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been trying to get my iphone 1st gen to jailbreak for over 3 hours and then I copied and pasted the text into a text file and renamed and saved it as “helper.bat”
THIS SOLVED EVERYTHING!
I had tried everything and was about to give up but just try davids bat script and make sure your phone is completely totally off. Then press down that power button and home button after clicking make it rain and away you go!
FINALLY I AM JAILBROKEN ON APPLE FIRMWARE 3.1.2
SAWEEET!!!!!!!!!!!
Tried all of these methods and no joy. Finally downgraded my 16GB 3G to 3.0 and re-jailbroke via redsn0w. Waiting on better solutions.
Richerd.. I kept on trying for over an hour. It happened after 15 or 20th attempt. No too sure how it happened. But I removed the USB a few times. Closed Blackra1n 2 times during recovery mode. And after so many tries, suddenly I saw Geo’s pic.
Keep try different methods.. it will happen surely
TRY IT TRY IT BUT NOTING CANT JB MY FONE IVE TRYED THE TWO METHODS AND NOTING GEO PICS NEVER POPS UP IT JUS STAYS ON BLACK PLAIN SCREEN BUT THE JB MSG POPS UP SAYING IF ITS THE EASIEST BLAH BLAH BLAH BUT MY IPHONE DOESNT RECOVER FROM REBOOT WHY?????????????
