This $25 speech-to-speech translation app can do magic – You talk in English-it talks back in Spanish. You talk in Spanish-it talks back in English. Simple as that. Developed by Jibbigo, this ‘Jibbigo Speech Translator English Spanish’ app has a vocabulary of roughly 40,000 words and users will have to simply speak a sentence or two at a time into the iPhone mic and the app will respond with an audible translation. Jibbigo is owned by Alex Waibel, professor of computer science and language technologies at Carnegie Mellon University. Here is the App Store link.

“Jibbigo’s software runs on the iPhone itself, so it doesn’t need to be connected to the Web to access a distant server,” Waibel said. “That’s important for travelers and especially for humanitarian aid workers who venture beyond the big cities. It’s in those areas, where wireless hotspots are few and far between — if they exist at all — that Jibbigo might be needed the most.”

Jibbigo is bi-directional; it translates a spoken sentence from English to Spanish or from Spanish to English for a two way dialog between English and Spanish speakers (Bi-directional operation is available on 3GS only. Older iphone models, 3G phones and iPod Touch run uni-directionally; the language direction is chosen at start-up.).
