The iPhone campaign is in its 6 year, and is up to 84 spots and counting. Adweek has covered Apple’s iPhone TV Ads in a beautiful way calling it, The Complete Campaign The story behind all 84 TBWA spots so far, beginning with the first teaser by Tim Nudd:
It’s hard to think of a product that’s had a greater impact on the culture in the past five years than the iPhone. Thanks to TBWA, it’s gotten remarkable advertising to match. Below, check out all 84 spots that have aired so far, beginning with the first teaser up through today.
Apple has aired 2 new Siri ads, Road Trip and Rock God. In “Road Trip,” a man decides to travel across the US from what appears to be Boston to Santa Cruz with his partner, and both of them consult Siri throughout the trip. In “Rock God,” a young man progresses from locating a guitar store to forming a rock band and changes the name Siri addresses him by.
Apple climbed back into the market leadership position with the launch of its iPhone 4S worldwide, and in the process it reached a new shipment volume record for itself and for the entire industry for a single quarter, according to IDC. Apple sold 37 million iPhones last quarter. IDC publishes every quarter ranking the top smartphone manufacturers by its estimates of their worldwide shipments is a closely watched benchmark.
Apple climbed back into the market leadership position with the launch of its iPhone 4S worldwide, and in the process it reached a new shipment volume record for itself and for the entire industry for a single quarter. Samsung marked a series of milestones for the quarter: breaking the 30 million units mark for the first time, posting the largest year-over-year increase among the top vendors, and finishing 2011 as the overall smartphone market leader. Nokia posted the largest year-over-year decrease among the top vendors, but its smartphone strategy took another step forward with the release of its first Windows Phone smartphones. Research In Motion finished the quarter with a mixed bag of results. Its new BB OS 7-powered BlackBerry smartphones reached additional markets, and total volumes for the quarter staved off a fourth consecutive quarter of sequential decline. HTC: Despite the many high-profile launches during the quarter… the Taiwanese vendor still shipped lower volumes compared to the previous quarter.
@asymco has shared some interesting growth chart of iPad, iPhone and iPod. The iPhone seemed to become a hit pretty quick, but even that didn’t grow as fast as the iPad. Still, it’s growth was much faster than the original iPod.
Its no surprise that the iPad has sold like mad, and that its first seven quarters on the market were met with phenomenal sales. iPad will surely continue to outperform with iPad 3 rumored to be launched by March 2012.
Apple has brought an innovative method to prevent Hong Kong scalpers from reserving iPhones. Just 2 weeks ago riots and crowds tried to buy multiple iPhones at the Beijing Apple Store and Apple had to close down that Store indefinitely. The new reservation system will no longer allow someone to reserve an iPhone without inputting full credentials that match a government issued ID.
Due to high demand, we are accepting a limited number of iPhone reservations per day. To request an iPhone reservation, please choose your store and the iPhone you want. If we have an iPhone reservation for you, you’ll receive a confirmation email by 9:00 p.m. tonight that includes the time when you can pick up your iPhone tomorrow. A government-issued photo ID matching the name and ID number on your reservation is required for iPhone purchases. If you don’t receive an email, we were unable to reserve an iPhone for you, and you can try again another time. Only those who receive an email confirming their reservation will be able to purchase an iPhone; we will not be selling iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S to walk-in customers.
Apple has stated it will not sell the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S on a walk-in basis. Scalpers are pretty organized, hiring migrant workers to stand in the line and buy the iPhone. When Apple closed the Sanlitun Store in Mainland China due to large crowds, the workers—identifiable by matching armbands or hats— became angry, because they were not going to be paid.
“iFixit’s iPhone transparent rear panel mod let’s you give your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S an amazingly distinctive look in a world where tens of millions of them are otherwise all but indistinguishable.” Georgia from iMore.com shows us a Clear Back Plate Mod from iFixit:
Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) released some interesting data on Thursday that suggests Apple’s latest iPhone model accounts for 89% of all Apple smartphones sold since the iPhone 4S was released in October,
We’re a bit surprised by the figures; the new iPhone offers beefier specs and a better camera than previous generation models, but the iPhone 3GS is free on a contract with AT&T and the iPhone 4 is still available at a discount in several markets. Still, those devices accounted for just 4% and 7% of all iPhone sales, respectively, since October according to CIRP.
“An amazing 19% of all iPhone buyers upgraded from the iPhone 4, a phone barely a year old at the time of the launch,” Mike Levin, CIRP’s co-founder, told AllThingsD. “Forty-two percent of iPhone buyers broke existing carrier contracts to get the new iPhone 4S.
Saurik has updated his twitter status with something real interesting. He has revealed that the release of the Corona jailbreak for A5 devices has led to almost one million newly jailbroken iPhone 4S and iPad 2 devices, in just 3 days. The release of Corona for A5 devices marks the first time a jailbreak has been available for the iPhone 4S.
So, @MuscleNerd’s 205k number was just the number of on-Cydia iPhone 4S’s; I believe that is now 494k. iPad 2 5.0.1 adds an additional 463k.
When Cydia is launched for the first time, it contacts the Cydia server, in part to see which SHSH blobs are available for it. This 957k number should be an accurate report of the total number of A5 devices jailbroken as of Monday afternoon. (Note: the number doesn’t include A4 devices or lower).
iPhone dev team have shared the following numbers - 491,325 new iPhone4,1 devices. 308,967 new iPad2 devices. 152,940 previously jailbroken (at 4.x) iPad2 devices. Total: 953,232 new A5 jailbreaks in a little over 3 days
M1 began selling camera-free iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S handsets on Friday. BGR is reporting that the Singaporean government does not allow its soldiers to carry phones equipped with cameras, but requires that all men serve two years in the military. The camera-free iPhone 4 starts at $449 while the high-end iPhone 4S is priced at $974.
According to CNET Asia, Singtel and StarHub are also planning to offer camera-less iPhones, although it’s unclear when the device will be launched on those carriers. It is unclear if or when camera-free versions of the iPhone will become available outside Singapore.
According to the operator, the camera modules (front and back) are completely removed, not just covered, and “may not be reinstalled”. The service has been certified by Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (Mindef), which means they will be allowed in army installations in the island-state. This benefits both full-time soldiers and many Singaporean men who are required to fulfill two years of mandatory military service. M1 will issue a certificate with each non-camera iPhone that will identify it as being approved by Mindef.
I was first pretty reluctant to try this trick, but then over the weekend I did try and succeeded. Siri on my iPhone 4 rocks. Thanks to Zeeshan (@xlnzee) who helped get things worked out . He ran a #Siri4ADay over the weekend which was a pretty successful event. I also participated and get Siri for free by using his Siri Proxy Server. Please note that this service usually costs $5 for 15 days of Siri usage.
Let me now explain the steps to make Siri available to iPhones other than 4S:
Get your iPhone 4 jailbroken (untethered) by using Redsn0w from the Dev Team blog. (Hope this is not too complicated)
Once your iPhone is jailbroken, you will find Cydia app on your springboard
Open Cydia and search for Spire. Download it to your iPhone
Now you will need a proxy server to interact with Siri
Contact Zeeshan (@xlnzee) via Twitter and request for a Siri proxy server
He will help you get Siri work on your iPhone. He did that for me too
Once you get the proxy address, just open Spire app in Settings and feed that address.
Reboot your iPhone and boom its all done
Note:It might take 10-15mins to set Siri on your iPhone. Once done, your iPhone will ROCK
Getting the right setting is crucial for Siri to work. @xlnzee will surely help you get it right. Best of luck.
This video was made by @DHowett, Chronic Dev Team member and famous iOS developer. iPhone 4S and A5 untethered jailbreak was demoed by none other than Pod2g. This proves that a jailbroken iPhone 4S will be available very soon, as early as early Feb . I am just guessing though, but very excited:
I found Cult Of Mac’s last weeks Friday night fight question interesting. Basically CultOfMac’s Friday Night Fights, is a new series of weekly questions about which is better: Apple or Google – iOS or Android. Interesting stuff.
So last weeks fight was “What’s Better? The iPhone’s 3.5-Inch Display, or Android’s 4+ Inch Superphones?”‘
According to me the winner is iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen. Designer Dustin Curtis went on to show why Apple chose a 3.5-inch display over a 4-inch one:
