Last time iPhone Nano rumors happened way back in 2008, I guess and Apple quickly denied it. And this has happened all over again. Rumors started flying around early this week about Apple looking at a smaller iPhone. But here is what The New York Times came up with this morning — We are weighing in on the previous rumors published by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal saying Apple may working on less expensive device with better voice control and MobileMe, but not an iPhone nano.
Apple’s engineers are currently focused on finishing the next version of the iPhone, which is likely to be similar in size to the current iPhone 4, said one of the people. The person said Apple was not planning to introduce a smaller iPhone any time soon. Analysts expect the new iPhone to be ready this summer.
Another person who is in direct contact with Apple also said that the company would not make a smaller iPhone at this time, in part because a smaller device would not necessarily be much cheaper to manufacture and because it would be more difficult to operate.
More important, a phone with a smaller screen would force many developers to rewrite their apps, which Apple wants to avoid, the person said.
So no Nano guys.. Enjoy your iPhone 5

Looks like Apple is feeding WSJ with crazy new rumors. But you never know if Apple’s PR is doing this. WSJ has been talking about the mysterious iPhone Nano aka Micro Phone from last week, this time an article by Ethan Smith’s new article in the Wall Street Journal talks about a new, less-expensive iPhone which he goes on to say that it has an edge-to-edge screen and weighs quite a bit less than the current iPhone 4. This phone sounds much like the iPhone Nano.
Apple Inc. is working on the first of a new line of less-expensive iPhones and an overhaul of software services for the devices, people familiar with the matter said, moving to accelerate sales of its smartphones amid growing competition. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model.
The new phone—one of its code names is N97—would be available to carriers at about half the price of the main iPhones. That would allow carriers to subsidize most or all of the retail price, putting the iPhone in the same mass-market price range as rival smartphones, the person said. Apple currently sells iPhones to carriers for $625 each on average. With carrier subsidies, consumers can buy iPhones for as little as $199 with a two-year contract.
This smaller iPhone would be more like a data ‘access point’ than something which could store all your music, movies and books. Maybe all this data could cloud managed by MobileMe service? No one knows as of now. We will have to wait for a while for the rumors to get more and more stronger. Till then we need to just guess.

Can this ever come true? Remember these iPhone Nano rumors a few years back. Looks like iPhone Nano rumors are back. Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is working on a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone for sale off contract. Yes you are reading it right, Off Contract
. The prototype is about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, said Bloomberg’s source. Wow!
9to5Mac reported that, to keep prices down, the smaller phone will use a processor, display and other components similar to those used in the current iPhone 4.
Apple is also working on a so-called dual-mode phone, two people said. This device would be able to work with the world’s two main wireless standards — the global system for mobile communications, used by AT&T and overseas carriers including Vodafone Group Plc, and code division multiple access, used by Verizon Wireless. It is not known whether Apple intended to include this capability in the cheaper iPhone.
And there would be a significant drop in the price. Currently, an iPhone 4 costs $600 off contract. Lets hope that this comes true. I am sure a smaller form factor would be fun to use.

This is great news for all of us. Atlast we will have more options to choose from. As you all know, an iPhone user can never move another platform and at times we too need options to choose from just like the Android handsets. Coming to this news shared by AppleInsider, “Apple is currently working to expand the iPhone line, and may offer larger and smaller models as soon as early 2011, one Wall Street analyst has said.”
“Our sources believe these likely represent new high-end and low-end iPhone models to complement its current iPhone 4,” Wu wrote in a note to investors. “One possibility we are picking up is a “mini” or “nano” iPhone with a smaller candybar form factor leveraging technology in its new mini touchscreen iPod nano.”
“We believe Apple moving to a more complete iPhone product line makes strategic sense in that its iPhone 4 addresses only the high-end of the market,” he said. “We think Apple should take a page out of its iPod playbook where it has had a lot (of) success with a 3-tier strategy addressing entry-level, mid-range and high-end, making it difficult for competitors.”
I am pretty excited about this Guys. Rumors of a supposed iPhone nano were quite common years ago, but have mostly died down since. Apple currently offers three iPhone models priced at $299, $199 and $99 in the U.S. with a two-year AT&T contract.
Lets wait and watch.

This is why Apple doesnt want to build an iPhone Nano:

Haha.. Over to Engadget – Over in some seedy warehouse in the depths of Shenzhen, the aptly titled iphone nano has emerged. As you could likely surmise, this completely improper knockoff gentle combines the best features from Apple’s iPhone and the iPod nano to create a singular, if not awkward device.

Boy Genius Report guys seems to be buzzing with fresh rumors about the new iPhone which going to be released this June. BGR claims that their source “pretty high up in AT&T’s food chain” has given them some more details about Apple’s new iPhone which are “100% confirmed”. Check this out:
- New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
- New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
- U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
- The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
- Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
- AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
- Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
- They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
- Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
- The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

Another rumor surfacing from Canada this time. “Fido, the Canadian iPhone reseller has plans to discontinue the sale of the iPhone 3G 16GB models. They will start to deplete their current stock at the beginning of April and will not be reordering” reports mobilesyrup
The 8GB will still be available and this could mean we might see a price drop soon… this would go right in line with what RBC Capitol Markets analyst Mike Abramsky has been saying about a possible $99 iPhone this June or July. Or perhaps this might mean that the rumour of the iPhone Nano is back on the table.

This rumor has been shared by Mobile Today which writes about O2’s decision to make iPhone 3G free on the £35 and £45/month contracts where it currently costs between £59 and £159. And with this, a stripped down version of iPhone may be launched with less memory or a smaller screen to cut costs and bring prices down. I am not too sure if this would happen. Apple intends to keep the ‘mass’ out of it’s customer base from a long time, I think. Anyways here is what Mobile Today had to say:
Details of the new Apple handset planned for June or July are not known, but there has been considerable speculation that it will be a mid-range ‘Nano-style’ device, which will be cheaper by compromising either on memory, camera or screen size.

I am not sure but, what if this rumor comes true; remember this article (iPhone Nano Update – Chip orders for low-cost Nano to be made in March) I had posted way back in Jan 09?

Apple formally confirmed today that there will be no iPhone Nano. This puts a full stop to all those iPhone Nano Rumors doing the rounds all this while.

AppleInsider confirmed this news:
No iPhone Nano – Cook also destroyed the speculation around an “iPhone nano,” saying, “You know us, we’re not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That’s not who we are. That’s not why we’re here. We’ll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone.”

Unwiredview.com has this breaking news – Chip orders for low-cost entry-level iPhone Nano to be made in March and the device could be launched by this June.
Though practically all rumors of an iPhone nano being released by Apple just died with the recently concluded Macworld 2009 expo, it gets revived once again through a Chinese language report found in the Economic Daily News.

This article published by DigiTimes, says that chip orders for Apple’s “low-cost entry-level iPhone Nano” might be made in March, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) will likely be the suppliers.
