If you are getting Error 21 or Error 1600 while downgrading your iPhone, then the problem is that you are ending up in m Recovery Mode and not in a DFU mode. Make sure that you follow the instructions available at theBigBoss to get into DFU mode:

You got to do a normal restore to previous firmware via iTunes and then put your iPhone into DFU mode, and only then you need to follow the instructions to downgrade your iPhone from OS 3.1 or 3.0.

Over to BigBoss:

DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode is not the same as restore mode. DFU mode bypasses the current OS installed and allows you to upgrade or downgrade your OS.

Recovery mode has a picture that says connect to iTunes. In DFU mode, the iPhone screen backlight is not even on and the display is blank. If you have anything on your display you are not in DFU mode.

Apple has released the 2.2 SDK to current iPhone Developers. Gizmodo has shared this screenshot from Gear Live. Apple seems to working pretty fast towards making iPhone 3G the most sought after phone in the smartphone space. With 2.1 firmware update, Apple fixed most of the iPhone’s bugs and with 2.2 firmware, iPhone would be a better smart phone for sure.

Well, that was speedy. Not too long after iPhone 2.1 arrived to fix most of iPhone 2.0’s most damning problems, Apple has seeded OS 2.2 Beta 1 to developers. No one’s had a chance to dive in yet to see what’s new, but some mo’ bug fixes, push notifications (finally) and added GPS features sound like a good bet, now that most of the bigger bugs are squished. This was very quick iPhoneDevTeam. This time you guys jailbroke 2.1 firmware within 24hrs. I guess this is great news for all those iPhone 1st Gen users. But still, iPhone 3G is not unlockable using this Pwnage, WinPwn or QuickPwn software. So if you are on 3G version and want to unlock it, this will be of no help. But if you are on older version, go for this. Though there are few bugs that users are facing while using this 2.1version on iPhone, there are quite a few solutions – mentioned in these comments section on iPhoneDevTeam’s blog.

Let me quickly get to the point. If you are looking to upgrade your older firmware version to 2.1, follow these steps:

Here are the new versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn that support the 2.1 firmware.  And as we just mentioned, iTunes was not harmed in the process ;-) no patching was required.

This does not address the new iPod Touch 2G device released this week.  Partly because none of us even have one yet :)

What to expect from iTunes 8 and iPhone 2.1 firmware

Loading ... Loading ...

Apple is going to release iTunes 8 and iPhone 2.1 firmware tomorrow, the 9th Sept. Here is the list of anticipated features that might come true:

  • 2.1 firmware beta might have an enhanced location-finding that could lead to true navigation as well as the roots for background push services
  • Genius auto-playlist feature as well as support for a second-generation iPod classic and the expected iPod nano and touch upgrades.
  • Push notification service in the 2.1 firmware – this feature lets third-party native programs receive data such as alerts or new messages without actively running. The measure saves processing power without interrupting some apps that depend on constant access to the Internet.
And along with this Kevin Rose’s iTune 8 predictions:

iTunes 8 includes Genius, which makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together. Genius also includes Genius sidebar, which recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don’t already have.

With iTunes 8, browse your artists and albums visually with the new Grid view; download your favorite TV shows in HD quality from the iTunes Store; sync your media with iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (2nd generation), and iPod touch (2nd generation); and enjoy a stunning new music visualizer.”
