Tags: 3G iPhone, Walt MossbergThis comes in as surprise. I was expecting software and version upgrade from Apple. But the first screenshot of next generation iPhone which are beginning to surface has a different look and feel too. This looks so very cool and exciting. The new iPhone will sport a glossy black back, replacing the satin nickel look found on the current model.
Here is what iPodObserver has to say:
If iPodOberver.com’s source is correct, the redesigned iPhone back also drops the black plastic end piece that covers the antenna, and it appears that Apple will continue to offer an 8GB model.
Of course, rumors are just rumors until Steve Jobs pulls a new iPhone out of his pocket. If the image proves to be legit, however, the glossy black finish will make a nice addition to the up-and-coming executive’s tech stash.

Update:
Tags: 3G iPhone, glossy black back, iPodObserverYes, this is coming straight from the horse’s mouth. Gizmodo has reported that AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega has talked about 3G iPhone becoming a reality very soon. He had mentioned earlier in the event that he expected all of their smart integrated devices to be 3G in the next couple months. Sascha Segan from PC Mag asked it that included the iPhone. De la Vega responded, “Let me repeat what I said: I think that you’re going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough.”

Taiwan’s
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (2317.TW) has secured an exclusive contract to assemble a more advanced version of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) popular iPhone, a person familiar with the situation told Dow Jones Newswires Friday. The person, who declined to be named, said Hon Hai would be producing next- generation iPhones for Apple and is the exclusive contract manufacturer for the new phones.
The arrangement frees Apple and its fellow vendors from running complicated, labor-intensive production lines, while the ability of Taiwanese companies to slash manufacturing costs helps cut product prices over time.

Apple has predicted it will sell 10 million of the current iPhone by the end of the year and has reportedly ordered that many units. The iPhone currently uses an EDGE radio, a digital mobile phone technology for increased data transmission rates over a cellular network. EDGE, however, is considered a 2.75-generation technology, versus a 3G technology, such as HSDPA, which is used in Europe.
Because data transmission on the iPhone is slower than 3G devices in Europe, there has been speculation that Apple hasn’t done as well as the company expected in the region. Gartner says the move to 3G is necessary for Apple to compete globally with other devices, but it won’t put the company on the bleeding edge of technology. HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, and others are selling 3.5G phones, which are available in Korea, Japan, Europe, and Australia.

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney told iPod Observer in an interview that he believes Apple has ordered a second batch of 3G iPhone, amounting to 10 million more units on top of the original 10 million first generation iPhone that Apple had already ordered and committed to sell by end of 2008.

Dulaney also speculated that the new 3G iPhone would use Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display, resulting in a thinner form factor. Using OLED display may cost more, but will help increase battery life due to lower power consumption. This makes sense because 3G is power hungry and Apple must do everything possible to retain the current battery life or even yet improve on it.

This rumor floating around this morning is much rumored to be the biggest surprise from Apple. Back in October last year, Steve Jobs promised, via a post on the Apple website, that the company would release a software development kit for the iPhone and iPod touch.
“We plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February” were the exact words as regards timescale, so rumours of an Apple event scheduled for late-February are not surprising.
One Apple site reports that the company that does the television at Apple events is hiring for a big event later in the month, while two other blogs are talking-up an event
scheduled for 26th February.
As well as the expected SDK, Penryn-based MacBook Pros with multi-touch trackpads have been hotly tipped to launch very soon, while a 3G iPhone is also rumoured after this week’s news that AT&T are rolling out more 3G coverage in the States.
