Apple announced the 2.1 iPhone firmware update last evening and said that it will be delivered on this friday. It would be fixing lots of issues and would also improve the battery life. Since I am on locked iPhone 3G now, I am going to update my iPhone as soon as it comes to my iTunes.
This 2.1 update would fix these issues:
- Big battery life improvements
- Fewer dropped calls
- Backing up is faster
- No crashes with Apps
Note: If you are on unlocked/jailbroken iPhone, please please DO NOT upgrade your iPhone.

If you are wondering wheather iPhone 3G could replace your Blackberry, the answer might lie in this report submitted by Computerword. Entitled iPhone 2.0 Is Ready for the Enterprise, but Caveats Apply, it is based on analysis of the new iPhone version 2.0 software and 3G handset. As per a report, Gartner disagrees that iPhone could become the next successful business phone, if this post on theregister.co.uk has to be believed. Excerpts from that report:
According to Ken Dulaney, author of the report, the lack of battery life on the 3G iPhone makes it impossible to maintain synchronisation with an Exchange server for a full day even if no calls are made. That’s a serious issue, but the lack of security is the biggest impediment to enterprise adoption. Phones may already be found in many board-rooms, where senior managers have overridden IT department objections, but Apple would like to sell to the middle managers who lack that power, and that would be a lot easier with Gartner’s seal of approval.

With iPhone 3G, the shorter battery life is something which many prospective buyers evaluate before buying the instrument. But here is the report by PC World which contradicts that belief - The battery life on Apple’s new 3G iPhone isn’t great, but it beats that of other 3G smart phones we’ve seen. PC World’s Test Center ran it through our standard talk-time battery life test, and found that on average it ran 5 hours, 38 minutes, a running time that we consider earns a Fair rating.
And the good news for 3G iPhone owners is that they’re probably better off than other 3G handset owners in terms of battery life. But that won’t help when your 3G iPhone stops running at the end of a long and busy day.

The new iPhone 3G’s GPS mapping unit is as powerful as in dedicated devices, battery life the best in its class and the much wanted cut-and-paste is still a possibility, is what ApplerInsider reports. This comes as a relief to many iPhone enthusiasts around the world. The most important being the cut-and-paste feature which is amongst the top list of wanted-features on iPhone.
As for other features on the iPhone wish list, many of these are limited more by time and current implementation, according to Joswiak. A long-requested ability to cut and paste, among other features, is said to be absent only because Apple had to prioritize which features it added to the iPhone 2.0 firmware and iPhone 3G before launch. The official doesn’t say if or when the feature would be implemented.

If you have any questions on iPhone’s battery life, please check this discussion board. Pretty interesting insights
Excerpts:
After full charge, it says
Usage: ~5hrs
Standy By: ~1Day
until the battery dies.
Notes: Wifi is on all the time and mostly used for Safari. Couple of calls a day. Sometimes randomly turning it on to look at the clock or just look at the menu.
—————
WiFi eats allot of battery because it is constantly looking for WiFi signals to connect too. If you don’t need WiFi for any reason during your day, turn it off. Your iPhone can easily last for 3+ days this way.

someone mentioned that the iphone will notify you at 20% and 10%. my phone doesn’t do that actually I have noticed that my batter will only go down a little more than half then all of the sudden it will display the red battery saying the battery is completely drained and I can turn on the phone. My battery life is great but this really frustrates me since i can’t really tell when to charge my phone. any solutions? (im using version 1.1.2)
