Note: You don’t have to jailbreak your iPhone for this to work.

You could do this with earlier versions of iTunes 7.6.x and 7.7.x as well. But then, Apple stopped this feature with later iTunes versions. This might have been done to boose sales.

Now you can again create custom from your DRM free songs that is present in your iTunes library anytime. For this to work, you don’t even have to jailbreak iPhone. Its absolutely safe. I created a few using this shortcut last evening and the are ringing absolutely fine.

Here is how to Create Custom iPhone Free using nothing but iTunes:

Note: This method only works with songs that are DRM free.

  1. Open iTunes > Click on the song you want to convert to a ringtone > Right click on the song and hit “Get Info.”
  2. Go to the “options” tab and go down to the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click OK when you’re done.
  3. Right click on your newly “clipped” song and select “Convert Selection to AAC.” The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined.
  4. After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music folder and locate your song (it will be in the iTunes > iTunes Music folder.
  5. Change the extension of that ringtone from .m4a to .m4r (tutorial on changing extensions, windows - mac)
  6. After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you’re done!
Note: Remember to go back into iTunes and uncheck your custom start and stop times for the original version of your song.

With the updated version of Jamendo Maker, you won’t even require a computer to build custom . Just install Jamendo from installer.app and build by importing any track that would be present in your iPod or use the mic to record your own ringtone.

This is what the developer of this wonderful native app has to say:

Hey, I was looking for custom and found this easy way to create for iPhone and that too within iTunes. Works like a charm. Try it out:

Note that you will have to have 1.1.2 firmware on your iPhone. For some reason it doesn’t work with v.1.1.1.

  1. Click on iTunes – Library
  2. Click the song you’d like to edit
  3. Locate the start and end times of the selection you want. To do this, move the iTunes playback head (at the top of iTunes) to the start of the selection and note the start time. Then move the playback head to the end of the selection and note the end (stop) time
  4. Click on File – Get Info – Options
  5. Click on Start Time and enter the start time you noted
  6. Click on Stop Time and enter the end time you noted
  7. Click on OK
  8. Click on iTunes – Preferences – Importing
  9. In Import Using, click on AAC Encoder
  10. Click on OK
  11. Click on iTunes – Advanced – Convert Selection to AAC
  12. Right click the new AAC track and choose to find in on your computer
  13. Rename the new AAC track as a .m4r
  14. Double click the new .m4r which will open up into the section of iTunes
  15. Sync new ringtone to iphone

Easy enough, all you need is iTunes to get on your iphone .

There is this video which makes it lot more easier. You can download it here - www.scriptedlizard.com
