I took the bold step of updating my secure and friendly 1.1.1 firmware version to 1.1.4 last evening. I must say it was a great experience. I had to re-unlock my iPhone twice. The first time it upgraded the firmware to 1.1.4 and upgraded my iPhone. But there were many issues with the phone. Let me tell you how I did it:

  1. Connected my iPhone to iTunes via USB cable
  2. I started iTunes and updated my firmware to 1.1.4 version
  3. Installed & started ZiPhone GUI v2.5c
  4. Hit the first button in the left called “Do it all” (Unlock, Jailbreak, Activate in one click)
  5. All set, the phone’s version was updated to 1.1.4 and it finally restarted.

I checked the phone, made a few calls and everything seemed to be working well. I started fiddling around further. I then started discovering a few issues:

  1. iTunes wouldn’t open and would just crash
  2. Photos wouldn’t open, crash just with a second
  3. Camera wouldn’t store the photos
  4. YouTube wouldn’t open either

At the same time I started download iTunes 7.6.1.9 from Apple. While it was getting installed, I also installed quite a few apps using Installer.app in my iPhone.

  • Once iTunes was upgraded to 7.6.1.9, I tried to sync my iPhone. No matter what I do, iTunes wouldn’t add the iPhone tab on its left panel. It was detecting my iPhone but wouldn’t provide me the iPhone interface.
  • I searched the web and found that iTunes 7.6.1.9 isn’t working with JB 1.1.4 iPhones in few cases.
  • I had to go back to my previous version of iTunes 7.6.0. Uninstalled this app and reinstalled iTunes 7.6.10

In the meanwhile, in my iPhone I added BossTool from Installer.app. And then I hit “Relocate my Applications”.

When I went back to my springboard, I saw all of my previously installed apps showing up. I had more than 7 tabs or scrolls now. All filled with apps. That’s where I realised that ZiPhone din’t remove my previously installed applications which were relocated by Bosstool. This was turning me crazy now.

I thought of re-running ZiPhone now and so that I could get back to the 1.1.4 factory setting. But I had few doubts:

  • Will the previously installed applications be cleaned this time?
  • Should I look for “how to format my iPhone completely” on the web?
  • Or how do I clean up all my previously installed files, because this will have issues everytime I relocate my Applications using Bosstool.

Then something stuck me :). If I restore my iPhone and the Reinstall 1.1.4 firmware using iTunes and then jailbreaking it using ZiPhone it would work.

So the second time I unlocked my phone, I followed these steps and boom, everything just worked prefectly fine. My iPhone is rocking as it used to. Its just PERFECT.

Coming to how I upgraded my iPhone to 1.1.4 the second time, Here is how I did it. Just to mention, my previous version was 1.1.4.

  1. Connected my iPhone to the computer using the USB cord. Make sure that iTunes is on
  2. Started ZiPhone and click on  “Click here to show advance features” button at the bottom right
  3. Hit “DFU Mode” button on the top right. The apple logo showed up on my iPhone
  4. Hit “Refurbish” (Restore lock) button on the left panel of ZiPhone software
  5. After 2-4 minutes, ZiPhone threw up an error called “Cannot Pair”. My iPhone was just showing some loading image at the bottom
  6. When back to iTunes and hit Restore my iPhone.
  7. Once the iPhone was restore, it stated showing the pre-activated screen. And just the emergence screen would show if I scrolled the slider.
  8. Now I went back to ZiPhone and Hit “Do it all” (Unlock, Jailbreak, Activate in one click)”
  9. Waited for 2-3 minutes and BOOM, the phone was restored back to 1.1.4 with everything in the springboard just working great.
  10. Restored my previously backed files using iTunes restore button.

And my iPhone is back to its original look with tons of apps, utilities and games on its springboard. Everything just looks great. There were very few apps which were not compatible with 1.1.4, but most of it (around 90%) just works fine on 1.1.4. I have added a section called “Top Native Apps” on top of this page and it lists most of the utilities, apps and games with a compatibility matrix on different versions of firmwares. I am still adding many more apps and games in this section and it should be completed in another week or so. Do it out - click here.
