Apple FaceTime video calling feature is coming to Fring app. Fring announced that its iPhone app will soon have 2-way video calling via both Wi-Fi and 3G.
With the new fring for iPhone you get lots of fring goodies including 2 way video-calling where you want and with whom you want!
- Face-to-face video calls with friends on their Droids, Nokia (Symbian S60) and other iPhones
- Video calls over 3G or Wi-Fi (Performance over 3G is subject to mobile operators’ 3G coverage & quality)

Also, the latest fring for iOS4 on iPhone 3GS & 4 includes loads of improved features including:
• Multitasking so you can be always on and available with fring running in the background and alerting you to new video calls, voice calls or chat without proactively opening fring (just like on all other supported phones).
• New Social Stream: A chronological stream of all tweets, facebook updates, chats and calls, all in one place! Easy cross-community communication and simple sorting capabilities.
• A Smarter address book: simply manages your buddy list, merges contacts and more
Fring for iPhone was updated to 3.0 yesterday and now has Free Video Calls for Fring-to-Fring and Fring-to-Skype chats. You can now see your friends and talk to them live. For those who havent have heard about Fring, Fring iPhone app [Free, App Store link] allows users to connect to multiple IM accounts at one go. And that includes Skype.
fring operates as your mobile social hub. Talk, chat & tweet on fring and other favorite social services including Skype®, MSN® Messenger, GoogleTalk™, Twitter, Yahoo! ™, AIM®, ICQ, all through one central profile, using your iPhone and iPod touch’s internet capability.
Fring released its latest Version 1.1.0.7 last evening. The previous update had happened way back November last year. There is this cool new feature called Always-On. This feature is only available to US and UK users for the time being. Let me quickly pull up this AlwaysOn feature from fring blog.
The new Always-On feature keeps you logged into fring even when the fring application is closed on your iPhone/iPod touch.
It works like this:
To activate the Always-On add-on, click on ‘More‘ –> Add-ons –> Always on.
You’ll get the following screen
Enter the email address you have configured into your iPhone and click ‘Send‘
Within a few seconds you should get an activation email. Open the email on your iPhone and click the link to activate the service.
Once you’ve clicked the link and activated the service you can click the home button and fring will keep you logged in. This of course works with all the services you use on fring ( fring, Skype, MSN, Google talk, ICQ, Yahoo etc)
These tweaks are applicable only if your iPhone is jailbroken. So you are on a jailbroken iPhone and have installed Fring and Skype apps on to your springboard. But gosh, you cannot make any calls using these 2 apps simply because Apple doesnt want you to make calls via 3G or EDGE and insist on having WiFi to make calls to mobile or landland, right? Here is a cool shortcut that will tweak your skype or fring app to make calls using your iPhone 3G or EDGE connectivity. Thanks to iPhone Tips & Tricks for this shortcut
Steps to run Skype over 3G or EDGE:
Launch Cydia under the System section you will find the VoIPover3G package. Make sure to install SSH server if not done yet.
SSH into your iPhone with Fugu (Mac) or WinSCP (Windows)
Open /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plist
Add com.skype.skype as a bundleitem (see pic, via plist editor)
Save VoIPover3G.plist
Reboot your iPhone, just to be sure
Done! You should be able to make phone calls via your 3G connection.
Note – Skype seems to crash every 30-40 seconds when installed on jailbroken iPhones. here is what needs to be done – If you have a jailbroken iPhone, and just want to use Skype normally (No VoipOver3G support), you must upgrade the MobileSubstrate file, so it stops crashing.- Just load Cydia and update the MobileSubstrate file.
And here are steps to run Fring over 3G or EDGE:
In Cydia under the System section you will find the 2.7 Kbytes VoIPover3G.
Install VoIPover3G and Restart your iPhone.
Launch Fring and use dailpad to make calls while on 3G or EDGE.
The SIP voice call (with a VoiceBuster account) over a slow flatfee GPRS connection is allowed by Fring after installation of VoIPover3G. The voice quality remains good. The delay is mostly not a problem but hey, international calls to landlines are mostly free!
I have been waiting for this app to appear on AppStore from day 1. I had his awesome app on my iPhone 1st gen and was in love with it. And this morning, I saw Fring [AppStore link] on AppStore. I don’t need any IM manager like AIM or Palringo anymore. Fring does it all. And to add it all, it connects to my Skype and my SIP (VoIP) account all at the same time. The best feature of Fring is that it provides seemless connectivity with Skype and any SIP account. Awesome stuff… And the best part, its absolutely FREE.
Let me quickly get to the features of Fring:
Take all IM buddies mobile and view them from one, integrated contact list
Free calls
Live chat instead of SMS
Call landlines and regular cellular contacts using SkypeOut or SIP
Enjoy mobile internet via fringAdd-on applications
View call history
Invite friends to fring
Send & receive files
Choose incoming call and message tones
Auto-roam in and out of WiFi hotspots
Create a fringAdd-on
You will have one searchable contact list with all your instant messaging buddies from Skype®, MSN® Messenger, Google Talk™, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo!™ and AIM® so you can easily see whose available and where they can be reached before dialing or starting a live chat session. In short, you can finally interact with all your favorite internet applications, services and communities from your iPhone.
Hey, I installed this Native App last evening and had to uninstall within 24hrs. I am not sure if I am the only one who is facing few issues with this app. Since I haven’t found any other blog talking about Fring issues, let me put up the list of issues I am facing. I am sure the new fring updates that is going to come in next few days would definitely resolve these issues. And I am going to keep trying Fring with every update that is released in the near future. Its just that I am a big fan of Fring and had been using this in my HP iPaq for over 1 year.
Issues I faced while using Fring:
Cannot use Skype – It keep crashing everytime I try to call anybody. I have a Skype out balance but it doesnt seem to work.
SIP isnt working either - it crashes Fring. I tried to call after restarting my iPhone a few times but nothing seems to help.
The biggest issue – iPhone ringer volume, click sound, SMS sound and any kind of sound that iPhone makes no more works. When I check my settings I find the ringer volume to be zero. Even if I scroll the ringer volume to max, it immediately scrolls back to zero.
After I uninstalled Fring, I got back my sound and the speaker started talking.
I am going to wait till this issue is resolved. Might be that my iPhone itself has some issues; if that is that is case, I will not install Fring till I upgrade my 1.1.4 firmware version to 2.0 which is going to come by this June.
Yes, this is something I have been waiting for from the day I moved from my iPaq PDA to iPhone. Wanted Fring to produce a iPhone native app. I have been using Fring from last 1 years now and just loved it. I could make skype calls, use my SIP(VoIP) if needed, had all my IP messengers Gtalk, ICQ, Yahoo, AOL and MSN under one app. And now we have Fring on iPhone.
Installed it last night and man this rocks, I have just fallen in love with this app. It has everything. I called up my friend in US using skpye in fring and it worked like a charm(The app crashed a few times though).
This stuff is just awesome. And the best thing about this app, it works in the background. So even if I close the app and move on to use some other app, fring still continues. ANd when there is a message or a call, it starts ringing Amazing.
By the way, Fring is an Israeli startup that offers VOIP & Chat service for mobile phone. Click here for the press release.
A pre-release version of fring for the iPhone available from www.fring.com/iphone
How to Install?
1. Add http://fring.com/iphone.xml to the source list under installer.app (JB iPhones only)
2. Go to Install under installer.app and hit ‘fring’ tab. Install it and enjoy this wonderful native app
