iPhone 3G has topped the list of most innovative gadget for the year of 2008. iPhone 3G not only had other mobile phones to complete with, it also had best games consoles, a laptop and a iPhone speaker system. Congrats iPhone. Last year it was iPhone 1st get and this year its iPhone 3G.
This news has been covered by Reuters. Here is an excerpt of the coverage:
iPhone 3G combines a phone with a music and video player was chosen by readers of Stuff magazine in its annual Gadget of the Year awards. The magazine described the iPhone 3G as “a faster, cleverer version of an already remarkable phone”. The phone’s first incarnation, launched in Britain last year, won the coolest gadget prize at last year’s ceremony.

Engadget has this covered this time, saying that Airtel India has claimed that no hacked in the world can hack iPhone 3G. Here is what it says - “Even the most deadly hackers on the planet won’t be able to crack the codes that support the iPhone’s Airtel applications with rival company SIMs.”

Bharti Airtel has worked very closely with Apple to develop “OPERATOR-SPECIFIC IPHONE APPLICATIONS”, as mentioned by Engadget.

iPhone 3G is going to be launched all over India on 22nd August i.e., tomorrow. All those iPhone 3G Features that we have been talking about all these months will now be available to iPhone enthusiasts in India as well. But there are these 3 Prominent Features that we wouldn’t be able to use here in India.
- iPhones users in India won’t get support for visual voicemail, one of the iPhone 3G’s standout feature. Airtel might bring this sometime later.
- Access to videos and music sold on the iTunes Store will not be available. Only AppStore will be available to Indian users.
- 3G is not yet active in India, might be available by this December, provided the Govt opens 3G bidding & approves the 3G players asap. Till then no 3G access on iPhone for Indian users. There would be EDGE which is a little better than dialup internet connection.
I have been using EDGE on iPhone 1st Gen from past few months in India, and must say, its pretty good. Works without any hitch. But since its too slow, I prefer using WIFI when I am in a wifi zone.

Another big big issue iPhone 3G might face in India would surely be the PRICE. It will not be a mass project @ 31k. But surely a Status Symbol. So lets get kicking guys…
[As someone says, if you want to be a part of the APPLE CULT, buy this phone]
There is no contract commitment from either Airtel or Vodafone. But the phone will be locked to the service provider. So if you buy from Airtel, you can only use Airtel SIM, same with Vodafone SIM. And if you are going abroad, you cannot swap SIMs and use any SIM. You will have to stick to Airtel/Vodafone and keep paying international roaming charges. Better to carry 2 phones when on International roaming.
WELCOME TO INDIA IPHONE 3G :))

HSBC might become the first big corporate client switching over to iPhones for its 200,000+ employees. HSBC has been using Blackberry for all its employee all this while. But this post on AppleInsider tells that HSBC is considering a move that would strip its employees of their blackberry handsets and equip them with 200,000 iPhones instead. If this comes true, iPhone might just revolutionize the corporate sector as well.
“We are actually reviewing iPhones from a HSBC Group perspective … and when I say that, I mean globally,” HSBC’s Australia and New Zealand chief information officer Brenton Hush told ZDNet.com.au on Tuesday. “You know, it’s a big decision, especially when you have an existing fleet out there,” he said. “But it’s definitely something we are considering from a HSBC Group perspective.”

I am not too sure if this news on Tech2.com is fully confirmed, but SSS who is a member on this blog, has just shared this breaking news. Tech2 has just shared the iPhone 3G pricing that’s going to be launched in India on the 22nd Aug. Its going to cost Rs. 31,000 ($735) for 8GB, while the 16 GB version will cost between Rs. 36,000 ($855) and 37,000.
I hope this doesn’t come true. Simply because so many of us have been waiting for the launch and expecting the price to be below Rs.24,000. And this comes as a shock to many. I would still wait for an official pricing release on either Airtel or Vodafone website.

Here is what Tech2 has to say:
Well, that’s about to change now as we’ve received official pricing for the most-awaited phone. The 8 GB version of the iPhone 3G will cost Rs. 31,000, while the 16 GB version will cost between Rs. 36,000 and 37,000. These prices are not inclusive of the plan these phones will come bundled with.

800,000 phones per week is a massive massive output from the point of view of any phone manufacturer anywhere in the world. TechCrunch has this coverage - “Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant that produces the iPhone 3G for Apple, has ramped up production to 800,000 units per week, says a source close to Apple with direct knowledge of the numbers. This is “above current full capacity” and there may be some concerns with quality control.”
Macrumor has this to add - “An early report claimed that Apple would produce 24-25 million iPhones throughout the life of the product. At a rate of 800,000 iPhones per week, Apple would produce over 40 million devices over the next year. ”
This is massive jump. iPhones might change the way we work within 5-7 years from now, I feel.

I shared this bit of information from Tech2.com last weekend and now comes another one from the same website. Tech2.com is a part of Network 18 group in India and is provides pretty authentic news. This one though is not fully confirmed by these guys, but still I would love to see iPhone being sold for Rs.13000 ($310) in India. Here is what Tech2.com has to say:
Some more info to come floating out of the rumor mill is that the price of the phone bundled with Vodafone will be around Rs 13,000 for the 8GB model. My common sense says to believe this rumor only when it’s confirmed, because it does seem too low a price for the iPhone 3G bundled with a plan.

It took 74 days to sell the first million iPhones way back in 2007, said Steve Jobs. And this time it just took 2 days to hit one million sale mark. This can only happen with a cult like behavior which is so common amongst Apple products. Isn’t this awesome!!! Here is what iLounge has to say:
Apple has announced that it sold its one millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday, just three days after its launch on July 11. The phone is currently available in 21 countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US, and will go on sale in France on July 17. “iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”
iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded more than 10 million applications from the App Store since its launch late last week, Apple has announced.
