Last time iPhone Nano rumors happened way back in 2008, I guess and Apple quickly denied it. And this has happened all over again. Rumors started flying around early this week about Apple looking at a smaller iPhone. But here is what The New York Times came up with this morning — We are weighing in on the previous rumors published by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal saying Apple may working on less expensive device with better voice control and MobileMe, but not an iPhone nano.
Apple’s engineers are currently focused on finishing the next version of the iPhone, which is likely to be similar in size to the current iPhone 4, said one of the people. The person said Apple was not planning to introduce a smaller iPhone any time soon. Analysts expect the new iPhone to be ready this summer.
Another person who is in direct contact with Apple also said that the company would not make a smaller iPhone at this time, in part because a smaller device would not necessarily be much cheaper to manufacture and because it would be more difficult to operate.
More important, a phone with a smaller screen would force many developers to rewrite their apps, which Apple wants to avoid, the person said.
So no Nano guys.. Enjoy your iPhone 5

Can this ever come true? Remember these iPhone Nano rumors a few years back. Looks like iPhone Nano rumors are back. Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is working on a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone for sale off contract. Yes you are reading it right, Off Contract
. The prototype is about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, said Bloomberg’s source. Wow!
9to5Mac reported that, to keep prices down, the smaller phone will use a processor, display and other components similar to those used in the current iPhone 4.
Apple is also working on a so-called dual-mode phone, two people said. This device would be able to work with the world’s two main wireless standards — the global system for mobile communications, used by AT&T and overseas carriers including Vodafone Group Plc, and code division multiple access, used by Verizon Wireless. It is not known whether Apple intended to include this capability in the cheaper iPhone.
And there would be a significant drop in the price. Currently, an iPhone 4 costs $600 off contract. Lets hope that this comes true. I am sure a smaller form factor would be fun to use.

The latest iPhone OS 3.1 beta that was released to developers last week contains something strange. Ars Technica has reported that there is this configuration file which has a reference to 2 products know as iProd0,1 and iProd1,1. It should be noted that reference to iProd0,1 was discovered back in March in another version of OS 3.0 beta, but there is now reference called iProd1,1 this time around.
The iProd1,1 device has been assigned a new productID of 4762 (versus 4757 of iProd0,1) and assigned a different ConfigurationDescriptor of “standardMuxPTPEthernet.” iPhone models also have this designation, and the additional interface identified in the plist for this configuration is “AppleUSBEthernet.” The consensus here seems to be that the new device may have gained high-speed networking capabilities — though the iPhone uses the interface to tether to a laptop to share its 3G connection.

Would this be iPhone Nano? Or could it be Apple Tablet? Lets the guess game begin

After a long long time I found some info about iPhone Nano. This time its from MacNN
“The design involves a very sophisticated yet complicated dual-surface user interface. The full face-side of this device will be nothing more than a display, much like the iPhone is today, while the back-side will be primarily dominated by a force-sensitive touch based surface. Your fingers, which act as a cursor, control the face-side UI by the back-side etched controls… The patent presents us with a wide array of modes that the new iPod nano or nano-styled device could be used in – such as phone mode, video play mode, audio play mode, calendar mode, email mode, address book mode and image capture mode.”

The patent also hints at simply providing a dual display device as well. Sounds pretty interesting right. Lets wait and watch.

This is why Apple doesnt want to build an iPhone Nano:

Haha.. Over to Engadget – Over in some seedy warehouse in the depths of Shenzhen, the aptly titled iphone nano has emerged. As you could likely surmise, this completely improper knockoff gentle combines the best features from Apple’s iPhone and the iPod nano to create a singular, if not awkward device.

This rumor has been shared by Mobile Today which writes about O2’s decision to make iPhone 3G free on the £35 and £45/month contracts where it currently costs between £59 and £159. And with this, a stripped down version of iPhone may be launched with less memory or a smaller screen to cut costs and bring prices down. I am not too sure if this would happen. Apple intends to keep the ‘mass’ out of it’s customer base from a long time, I think. Anyways here is what Mobile Today had to say:
Details of the new Apple handset planned for June or July are not known, but there has been considerable speculation that it will be a mid-range ‘Nano-style’ device, which will be cheaper by compromising either on memory, camera or screen size.

I am not sure but, what if this rumor comes true; remember this article (iPhone Nano Update – Chip orders for low-cost Nano to be made in March) I had posted way back in Jan 09?

Apple formally confirmed today that there will be no iPhone Nano. This puts a full stop to all those iPhone Nano Rumors doing the rounds all this while.

AppleInsider confirmed this news:
No iPhone Nano – Cook also destroyed the speculation around an “iPhone nano,” saying, “You know us, we’re not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That’s not who we are. That’s not why we’re here. We’ll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone.”

Unwiredview.com has this breaking news – Chip orders for low-cost entry-level iPhone Nano to be made in March and the device could be launched by this June.
Though practically all rumors of an iPhone nano being released by Apple just died with the recently concluded Macworld 2009 expo, it gets revived once again through a Chinese language report found in the Economic Daily News.

This article published by DigiTimes, says that chip orders for Apple’s “low-cost entry-level iPhone Nano” might be made in March, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) will likely be the suppliers.

Macrumors found this interesting article on money.cnn.com talking about some analyst at Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co, quoting that Apple is getting ready to introduce a “lower-cost version” of the iPhone.
“Some call this device the iPhone nano,” Berger wrote in a research note. ” Whatever one calls it, we believe this device is on its way.”
iPhone Nano rumor is not dying down at all. I hope to see iPhone Nano this MacWorld 2009 which is just a few days away.
