This happened to me a few times. But I was of the opinion that it might be because of some other reason. This issue occured when I accessed my GMail account through iPhone Mail app, the Mail app would crash. This wouldn’t happen when I accessed my POP3 mail accounts. I was checking iPhoneAtlas and found that there are quite of them who are facing this very issue. Here is what users on Apple Discussion forum are sharing:
Phone 2.1 gmail IMAP keeps crashing - Discussion Thread:
>> I just updated to firmware 2.1 on my iPhone 3G, and I have been having some major problems with gmail. Basically, in all mail applications, plus applications that use mail, the application will crash whenever I do something with email. I have another IMAP account on my phone, but this only happens with gmail.
>> I am experiencing the same problem and found (after the 4th restore) if you QUICKLY delete the account in settings after experiencing the problems (quickly since even the mail settings tab will freeze up) and then recreate it, you buy yourself a few more hours of use….
I hope Apple releases a fix soon, or else I have to weigh reverting back to 2.1.x.Click here to read the rest of this discussion thread on Apple Forum
iPhoneAtlas says:
Several users have reported an issue in which accessing Gmail accounts causes the iPhones Mail application to crash consistently. Likewise, any other applications that access Gmail, including Contacts, crashes when Gmail data are present.
Here is how to fix this issue:
- Reset network settings: Settings > General > Reset network settings
- Restore the iPhone in ITunes.
- Change password Navigate to your Gmail account page on a computer and change the accounts password. Next, delete the Gmail account from the iPhone and reestablish it.
