Gizmodo has found some new stuffs in the new iPhone 4.0 Beta 4 OS. The default home screen is different now – instead of all your apps being spread out when you first turn on your iPhone, now some—the clock, calculator, compass, and voice memo apps are located in a folder called “Utilities. There are now some new default wallpapers too.
MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team has posted a video on YouTube which shows a Cydia app Veency running on iPhone firmware 4.0. These guys are damn fast. Good for iPhone users who are on Jailbroken iPhones. Basically veency is an VNC app which lets you see and control you’re iPhone from a computer. Pretty cool stuff… This video also shows the cydia icon, new dock, new calculator button and the new folders feature.
I can understand… as iPhone 3G and iPod 2G runs on older processors which are half as powerful as iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G, Apple will not allow Multitasking features on these 2 older devices. But we would still appreciate if Apple allows it, even if the performance suffers. Gizmodo goes on to say:
When the software ships in the summer, iPhone 3GSes and iPod Touch 3rd-gens devices will get all of the new features. The iPhone 3G and Touch 2G will get “many things,” which doesn’t include multitasking. I repeat: the iPhone 3G won’t get multitasking, ever. iPhone 2Gs will be left on a hillside somewhere to die of exposure, or something.
Last evening Apple announced the developers preview of the all new iPhone OS 4.0. This new OS will provide over 1500 new APIs for developers and over 100 new user features. This SDK will be available at the Apple website in some more hours. This time Apple focused on 7 new iPhone OS 4 features, the most noteworthy being the ability to run any application in the background via the new MULTITASKING APIs.
The multitasking APIs allow applications to run specific services in the background while the full application is suspended. Double-clicking the Home button provides access to all of your running applications by moving the current app up to reveal a dock-like interface. Icons of running apps are placed in the dock and can be scrolled through with a swipe.
Watch this video to get an hang of how multitasking will works on iPhone OS 4.0:
AppleInsider broke this news sometime back – Apple is finally planning to offer a “full-on solution” for multitasking in version 4.0 of the iPhone OS
Apple this summer will go a long way towards silencing critics and catering to one of the most prevalent demands of its iPhone user base, when it introduces a multitasking solution through the handset’s 4.0 software update that will finally allow several third party apps to run concurrently and in the background.
An inability to run more than one application at a time is one of the most frequent criticisms of the iPhone OS – and the ability to multitask is often touted as a point of differentiation by rival handset makers. The new version of the iPhone OS is expected to launch this summer.
From a user-facing perspective, Apple plans to deliver a multi-tasking manager that leverages interface technology already bundled with its Mac OS X operating system, according to those same people. It was requested that specifics be withheld at this time, as the iPhone Software 4.0 remains under development and reportedly has a quite ‘way to go’ before it’s ready for prime time.
The iPhone rumors make my sit up with excitement. BGR has something really cool this time as well. One of the guy at BGR who is very well connected with Apple sources, has some cool knoledge about the upcoming iPhone OS 4.0 update which might be showcased at the 27th Apple event in San Francisco.
- There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
- “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
- Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
- The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
- The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.
This is just awesome. Waiting for the 27th. And if everything goes well, we should have this 4.0 OS released the next day itself, which would be the 28th Jan.
iPhone OS 4.0 is surely coming, says CNET. CNET received an email from a prominent app developer on Friday which confirmed that developers have started submitting updated apps for the new iPhone OS 4.0.
The message included the following snippet: “Just wanted to give you a heads up that we’ve submitted an updated app for the new iPhone OS 4.0 software.”
Later on, the CNET post was updated with this info: According to the developer, this press release was meant to refer to a 4.0 version of the app itself, not OS 4.0. Even so, I think it’s very likely the Apple tablet will arrive with an updated iPhone OS. We’ll find out in a few weeks. In the meantime, keep the OS 4.0 wish list discussion going!
It seems almost certain that Apple’s iSlate/iTablet will run on the iPhone OS, we will have to wait and see how this OS would be ported to run on 2 entirely different hardwares. Moving forward, iPodNN has now confirmed that the iPhone 4.0 firmware is in deep internal testing and it hasnt been released to developers because there seem to be too many references in current builds to functionality of iSlate.
Apple is deliberately holding back on updating the iPhone firmware, a “close Apple connect” is said to have learned. While testing of v3.1.3 and even v4.0 firmware is believed to have been exposed in mid-December, no updates have been announced by Apple, or lately made available to developers or the public. The reason, says the source, is that there are too many references in current builds to Apple’s upcoming tablet, which the company does not want leaked.
