Thanks Om for sharing this cool comparision chart. He found it at BillShrink which has this to say – “While sticker prices are roughly comparable between smartphones, each offers its own particularly generous features.”

Palm continues to breach iTunes security and makes sure that Pre smartly disguises itself as another Apple product and syncs itself with iTunes. Recently iTunes 9 was released and it broke Pre’s syncing feature, but within days Palm issued a WebOS which re-enabled syncing. This Joy of Tech image is just too cool. Check it out:

Looks like Palm Pre no longer needs iTunes sync. Palm on Monday announced that ts latest update to the Pre webOS and there was no mention of ‘media sync’ feature. This media sync feature used to bring the ability for Pre to mimic itself as an iPod when connected to iTunes. Here is that announcement link. The Register shared this information:
Palm and Apple have been playing hide the salami with iTunes syncing since the Pre shipped in June. First syncing was in, then it was out. Then in. Then out.
But Palm won’t admit that its media sync feature is turned off for even. The company spokeswoman told us, “We never comment on what might or might not be on our product roadmap.”

Now that Palm has opened up Palm Pre SDK to the world at large, it will be good see how app developers embrace this SDK. Palm app store selection is limited to a paltry 28 apps currently, the wider release of its Mojo SDK is expected to be launched soon which will increase that number.
One iPhone app developer named Craig A. Hunter downloaded this SDK and tried it out. He felt that this SDK needs features – webOS development was based on HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, but I was hoping there was a way, some way, any way, to tap into advanced hardware features and software technologies.
Chief on my list is OpenGL, which is a requirement for serious games. GL even became necessary for some of my simpler apps, like Kaleido and Butterfly Collection, since basic software rendering just isn’t responsive enough for smooth animations at decent speeds. You need to tap into the graphics hardware with OpenGL ES.
Sadly, my suspicions were confirmed — there is no way for developers to tap into OpenGL ES using the webOS SDK, despite the fact that the hardware supports it. So that’s a major blow. Then I took a look at the accelerometer capabilities. The accelerometer is desirable for games that use tilt control of course, but is also key to apps based on the equations of motion, like my gMeter (vehicle performance) and greenMeter (eco driving) apps.

Apple’s latest iTunes version 8.2.1 which was released sometime back has finally locked out Palm Pre syncing feature. TiPB has confirmed this news with this info:
Apple has released a minor update to iTunes, version 8.2.1 available via pop up when you open iTunes, or when you launch Apple Software Update: iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.
![itunes-palm-pre itunes palm pre iTunes 8.2.1 has disabled devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including Palm Pre [UPDATE]](http://iphoneindia.gyanin.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/itunes-palm-pre.png)
Apple is confirming the matter as well: “iTunes 8.2.1 is a free software update that provides a number of important bug fixes,” says Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “It also disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre. As we’ve said before, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with unsupported digital media players.”
This is not a big surprise given how the two companies have been growling at each other over such things as touch screen technology and so on. Its unfortunate for Palm Pre users who may have a lot of their music in iTunes, whether on a Mac or a Windows PC, but it’s not painful necessarily, just inconvenient. There’s an application out there called DoubleTwist, which debuted early last year that lets you manage all your media across your many devices. There’s also the option of not updating iTunes.

UPDATE: Palm’s response.
Just got a statement from Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox. “Palm’s media sync works with iTunes 8.2. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we can consider.”

A benchmarking suite called SunSpider was used to test the performance of iPhone 3G and 3GS, the T-Mobile G1 running Android, and the Palm Pre running webOS by Medialets. And who else by iPhone 3GS outperformed the Palm Pre by a factor of three and the T-Mobile G1 by over a factor of five.

This might happen with the next iTunes version. Apple hasnt yet categorically stated that they would stop Palm Pre support to iTunes, but while acknowledging that “some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software,” Apple would like to remind everyone that such capabilities are—like the beauty of youth, glory, and ice cream under the hot summer sun—fleeting., reports Macworld.
In fact Apple has clearly mentioned this:
Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.
Looks like Apple is simply giving Pre owners a friendly warning that while their non-iPhone/non-iPod devices are syncing up with iTunes just fine now, that may not always be the case.

This is what I call cheap publicity. This Pre fan has taken his Palm Pre love, or perhaps iPhone hate, to a new level of idiocy. After purchasing a Palm Pre, he took a hammer and completely smashed his iPhone’s screen to pieces. A true moron.
