Remember Podcaster.app, which was rejected by Apple last month? Podcaster.app replicated the Podcast feature of iTunes and that was the only reason it was rejected by Apple, many bloggers felt. And now, TUAW has shared another hidded feature in 2.2 firmware. On the air downloading of podcasts directly to your Podcast tab of iPod.app is now going to be possible after 2.2 update. Though this seems to be a rumor, when it appears on TUAW, its almost confirmed. Lets see how this works:
A tipster shared with us some screenshots of the new firmware, including what appears to be the ability to download podcasts directly to your iPhone (and presumably your iPod touch). This could tidily explain why Apple rejected the Podcaster app last month. The option to “get more episodes” doesn’t appear to work in this firmware build, however.

Apple has now barred the unofficial method to add apps into iTunes. When Podcaster app was rejected by Apple, Podcaster found a way to ask users to directly add the app into iTunes and then get it on their iPhone 3G without even jailbreaking it. This way Podcaster would be on your iPhone 3G eventhough its not on AppStore. Apparently this process of directly adding apps into iPhone is not being liked by Apple. AppleInsider reports that:
After an iPhone app developer successfully discovered a workaround for being turned down at the App Store in iTunes, Apple has cracked down and barred an unofficial method as well, potentially raising an anti-competition dispute.
While Apple itself didn’t attempt to explain its move, the clampdown came after the company rejected Podcaster for reasons still disputed today. The iTunes operator had left Podcaster in limbo for several weeks between July and the end of August, only to turn it down over its alleged duplication of iTunes functionality. Neither the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store nor the music player in the iPhone and iPod touch firmware offer the ability to download podcasts.

After rejecting Podcaster, another app called MailWrangler got reject by Apple. MailWrangler - an app that enabled a user to add their GMail accounts which they could load and switch between them quickly.
Angelo DiNardi writes about his experience in his blog “MailWrangler and the Apple App Store“. Apple rejected this app on similar grounds - duplicating the functionality of a built-in iPhone application, this time the ‘mail.app’. Podcaster was rejected because it duplicated the ‘iPod’s podcast feature’.
Over to Angelo DiNardi - I wrote a small iPhone app called MailWrangler. Basically this app enabled a user to add their GMail accounts (standard and Google Apps For Your Domain) which they could load and switch between them quickly. Using just the Apple Mail application you aren’t able to see threaded views, your google contacts, archive (quickly), star, etc without going through the hassles that are present when using Gmail’s IMAP on the iPhone. There’s a similar app for the Mac desktop called MailPlane.
Apple wrote back - … Your application duplicates the functionality of the built-in iPhone application Mail without providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality, which will lead to user confusion. …
