Apple released iPhone OS 3.0.1 last evening and solved the SMS security vulnerability which was discovered at Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. This OS 3.0.1 must be installed asap.

And if you are on unlocked or jailbroken iPhone – DO NOT UPGRADE TO THIS OS. Wait for Dev Team to come up with newer Redsn0w/Ultrasn0w versions.

Did You Know? iPhone SMS bug could hijack every iPhone on this planet

This is getting scary – Apple is still busy rejecting apps like Google Voice, which I believe is a break through. Anyways, according to Gizmodo, there is a flaw on the iPhone that allows for it to be hacked via SMS. This info was first shared by Forbes. Once the hijacking has occurred, the bug can also access your contact list and start spreading it to everybody that you know. And then to everybody they know.. viral hijacking!!!

You would get one SQUARE character in your SMS and then that program will start shooting invisible SMS bursts and with that your iPhone will be completely taken over by the hacker. WOW, this is shocking. This bug was found by the cybersecurity researchers last evening. This bug can spread to your friends iphones, colleagues/family iPhones too. It can dial any number and visit any website. It can also switch on camera, microphone apps too.

What do you do when you get this SQUARE character? Examiner.com has a quick solution to this:

Well, turn off your phone if you get that little one character SMS message. If you don’t, you are putting you and your contacts at risk.

This is saddest part of this story – Apple was notified about this a month ago and still has done absolutely nothing to fix it :(

AppleInsider shared this bit of security flaw in iPhone’s OS which is being looked into by Apple experts currently. Apple is working to repair a serious security flaw in the iPhone’s operating system – one that could allow an attacker to track the phone’s location via GPS, eavesdrop on conversations via the microphone, or create a mobile bot net capable of unleashing denial of service attacks.

The attack takes advantage of a vulnerability in the phone’s short messaging service, or SMS, feature, allowing an outside party into the phone’s root access without the owner’s knowledge. The exploit takes advantage of the fact that SMS can send binary code to an iPhone. That code is automatically processed without user interaction, and can be compiled from multiple messages, allowing larger programs to be sent to a phone.

iPhone Bug No.2 – Security bug is related to Emergency Call

There was this bug in iPhone which allowed anyone to get around the iPhone’s passcode lock. This bug was fixed by Apple in the 2.1 firmware update. There is this programmer’s 12 year old son who has discovered another small security bug in the Emergenct Call feature.

If you have turned on the passcode lock and disabled SMS Preview, iPhone enables a mandatory passcode. If a message is received during the passcode entry or while the screen is locked, a generic message of “New Text Message” appears, to prevent viewing of messages without unlocking the phone. But Karl Kraft found a way to get around this:

If however the phone is placed in emergency call mode, any incoming SMS messages are previewed instead of presented as the generic messages. Thus all I need to do to intercept the messages from his girlfriend is to place the phone in emergency mode and wait 30 seconds for the next sickly sweet message.

Not a big one though. I am sure Apple will get rid of this but with the 2.2 firmware update.

You can now send absolutely free SMS to anyone in the US using AIM native app. You will have to download AIM from AppStore which is available for free. Install it and follow the instructions below:

Download AIM onto your iPhone, then start it up. If you want to send a text message to (617) 555-1212, just send a new IM to +16175551212. You should receive a confirmation message from AOL saying your message has been sent, and the user can reply and you’ll receive it on your phone as an IM. Hope this hint saves some people a few bucks.
