Steve Jobs did infact worked closely on iPhone 5 with larger display

Bloomberg sources has just claimed that Steve Jobs worked closely on the new iPhone before his death in October. The new iPhone will be a complete overhaul according to three people, all of which apparently have knowledge of the plans.

The next iPhone, which some have called the iPhone 5, and will feature a new 4-inch display. The timing indicates a release timeframe earlier then previous rumors of October. The design change will be Apple’s first for the iPhone since 2010, when it introduced the iPhone 4. Electronics makers, led by Samsung, are moving toward bigger screens, as consumers use handheld devices for a broader array of tasks, including watching video, playing games and browsing the Web.

The new iPhone has been in development prior to the iPhone 4S, which was announced last October, said one source. The current hardware design is now 18 months old, dating back the release of the original iPhone 4. Jobs was said to have “played a key role in developing the phone“.

This makes plenty sense. This new iPhone will represent a major shift in design for Apple as they move away from the the 3.5-inch display that has been the staple since the original model. A major hardware revision which appears imminent is likely something that was years in the making, years during which Jobs was still very active in all the decisions at Apple.

“Steve Jobs didn’t really hate Android” – Larry Page

In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Google CEO Larry Page said that despite Steve Jobs’s rather public hatred, “the Android differences were actually for show.” Page claimed that, “For a lot of companies, it’s useful for them to feel like they have an obvious competitor and to rally around that. Steve Jobs famously vowed to spend his dying breath and all of Apple’s cash to destroy Google’s Android operating system.

I think the Android differences were actually for show. I had a relationship with Steve. I wouldn’t say I spent a lot of time with him over the years, but I saw him periodically. Curiously enough, actually, he requested that meeting. He sent me an e-mail and said: “Hey, you want to get together and chat?” I said, “Sure, I’ll come over.” And we had a very nice talk. We always did when we had a discussion generally.

According to the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson, when you became CEO you went to Jobs for advice. I know you had your differences at the end around Android, but what did you take from him as a mentor and a friend?

Wait, the fury around Android was for show?

I think that served their interests. For a lot of companies, it’s useful for them to feel like they have an obvious competitor and to rally around that. I personally believe that it’s better to shoot higher. You don’t want to be looking at your competitors. You want to be looking at what’s possible and how to make the world better.

Top Innovator of All Time Among Young Adults – Steve Jobs #2

Lemelson-MIT Invention Index conducted this survey aimed at young adults aged 16 to 25, and found that 24% of respondents labeled Steve Jobs as the greatest innovator of all time. Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of many modern day technologies took first place with 52%.

Mac Observers covered this survey and said that demographic is highly influenced by technologies and consumer electronics provided by Apple and has been subjected to much lauding of Mr. Jobs by the media, especially since his death. It is therefore reassuring that, despite modern day coverage, young adults still have a grasp on history. Perhaps the only concerning thing about this list is the inclusion of someone like Mark Zuckerberg over Nikola Tesla.

Virgin America honors Steve Jobs with ‘Stay hungry, Stay foolish’

Virgin America spokesperson Abby Lunardini made an interesting statement yesterday – Virgin America Airbus A320 now features the quote, “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” directly beneath the cockpit in tribute to the late Steve Jobs, reports CNET.

The quote is taken from Jobs’s 2005 Stanford commencement speech and was suggest by a Virgin America employee. ”The ‘Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish’ aircraft name was actually submitted as a tribute to Mr. Jobs by one of our employees in an internal plane naming competition.

The idea behind Virgin America was to reinvent the travel experience by thinking differently about design and service–we are known for the tech-forward amenities we offer onboard,” Lunardini said.

Apple threatens legal action to ‘In Icon’ over Steve Jobs action figures

With no detail overlooked, the Steve Jobs 12″ action figures looks just too perfect. These 12-inch figurine comes complete with Jobs’s trademark blue jeans, sneakers and black turtleneck sweater, is created by a Chinese company In Icons and was set for release in February. But Apple has allegedly threatened the toy maker unless they cease trading. The Telegraph said in a press release that In Icon’s Tandy Cheung told ABC News that the company has no plans to cease production, arguing that they can’t copyright Steve Jobs’ appearance.

Apple can do anything they like. I will not stop, we already started production…Steve Jobs is not an actor, he’s just a celebrity… There is no copyright protection for a normal person… Steve Jobs is not a product… so I don’t think Apple has the copyright of him.

Apple reportedly said in a letter to the Chinese manufacturer that any toy that resembles the technology company’s logo, person’s name, appearance or likeness of its products is a criminal offence. eBay is already selling the plastic doll at $135 each.

Another interesting news about Steve came from the Grammy awards. The Recording Academy announced that Steve Jobs was awarded posthumous recipient of a Special Merit Grammy award. Jobs was joined by R&B legend Dave Bartholomew and jazz recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder in receiving the Trustees Award, which recognizes “outstanding contributions to the industry in a nonperforming capacity.”

An exclusive ceremony will be held to honor the recipients on Feb. 11, 2012 and a formal acknowledgment will be made during the Grammy Awards telecast on Feb. 12.

BBC Documentary – Steve Jobs: Billion Dollar Hippy

Over the weekend I got a chance to watch a very interesting BBC Documentary called Steve Jobs: Billion Dollar Hippy. Checkout the YouTube video below. Worth watching:

Broadly considered a brand that inspires fervour and defines cool consumerism, Apple has become one of the biggest corporations in the world, fuelled by game-changing products that tap into modern desires. Its leader, Steve Jobs, was a long-haired college dropout with infinite ambition, and an inspirational perfectionist with a bully’s temper. A man of contradictions, he fused a Californian counterculture attitude and a mastery of the art of hype with explosive advances in computer technology.

Insiders including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, the chairman who ousted Jobs from the company he founded, and Jobs’ chief of software, tell extraordinary stories of the rise, fall and rise again of Apple with Steve Jobs at its helm.

Assessing Steve Jobs’ Historic Influence – TechCrunch

Awesome video from TechCrunch. And when you think of comparing Bill Gates to Steve Jobs, listen to this – most fundamental difference between Jobs and Bill Gates. Jobs poured himself into his products whereas Gates continues to pour himself into society. Watch it and you will agree with me :)

At the beginning of his rich and very fair biography of Steve Jobs, Walter Isaacson notes that Steve himself “found the endeavor of assessing historic influence fascinating.” So when Isaacson came into the San Francisco TechCrunchTV studio earlier this week, I asked him for his personal assessment of Steve Jobs’ historic influence. Including Jobs in a pantheon of business icons such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Walt Disney, his major contribution to history, Isaacson explained, lay in his ability to combine awesome artistry and technology

Did you know – Steve Jobs originally hated ‘Think Different’ ad

Forbes has shared this very interesting info about Steve Jobs and Apple. An advertising executive that helped create the campaign has taken to Forbes to set the record straight, and the truth is that Steve Jobs originally hated the very ad that brought Apple back from the brink of destruction. Rob Siltanen describes the day he and his creative partner met Steve Jobs to discuss working on a new campaign for Apple:

Jobs walked into the conference room wearing his trademark black mock turtleneck, shorts and a pair of flip-flops. But while he looked casual, he was all business.

The hellos and introductions were very short, and there was zero time spent reminiscing about the glory days when Lee and the old guard at Chiat helped Jobs create some of the most awe-inspiring advertising of all time. Jobs basically said, “Good to see you. Thanks for coming. Now let’s get down to business.” He then went on to say that Apple was “hemorrhaging” and the company was in worse shape than he had imagined. He said, “We have some decent product, but we need to get things figured out. I’m putting the advertising up for review, and I’m meeting with a handful of agencies to see who ‘gets it.’ I’ve already been talking with a couple of agencies that seem pretty good, and you’re invited to pitch the account if you’re interested.” At this point I thought to myself, well, this isn’t going as planned.

Steve Jobs never thought of a television campaign. He thought that whatever advertising push Apple did next should be mainly for print.
