The best way to unlock your iPhone 3G would be follow step-by-step instructions published by CrunchGear. Let me briefly share with you all those steps. This is the most simple way to unlock and jailbreak your iPhone 3G. For a detailed flow with screenshots, follow CrunchGear:

How to unlock your 3G iPhone

Yellowsn0w is out and it’s ready to rock. Here’s how to become SIM-independent.

NB: Install the latest firmware before beginning this process.

  1. First, download quickpwn and jailbreak your phone.
  2. Use the latest firmware to pwn your phone (download it from Apple here). This will allow you to install Cydia or Installer. If you just updated your phone or updated your phone on the computer you are running quickpwn on, you probably won’t have to download the firmware.
  3. Then, add the repositories (DO NOT ENTER THESE URLs INTO YOUR BROWSER per Dev Team’s instructions).
    For Cydia enter: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
    For Installer enter: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/
  4. Install yellowsn0w. Run it.
  5. Turn off the iPhone and install your third party SIM.
NB: f you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings.
  6. Turn on the phone. Wait until your carrier pops up. If it doesn’t, take the SIM out and reinstall it.

Keep checking Yellowsn0w for the latest versions of quickPWN and yellowsn0w if you face any issue while unlocking your iPhone 3G.

UPDATE: 17th Dec 2008

3G Unlock - iPhone Dev Team

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

  • The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
  • This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
  • You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
  • The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.  It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.
  • Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at.  We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.
  • We’ll stream a live demo of the unlock before Christmas (see the update at the end of this post)

Status on unlocking and jailbreaking iPhone 3G and 2.0.2 firmware

iPhone 3G and the 2.0, 2.0.1,2.0.2 and 2.1 firmwares are now released. The iPhone Dev Team have released the newest version of Pwnage tool, making it possible to activate and jailbreak the newest firmware. Owners of the old iPhone will also be able to unlock their phone. The new iPhone 3G is not possible to unlock at the moment.

Jailbreak/Quickpwn new iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G firmwares

Winpwn 2.5 beta is released. It supports jailbreaking (using quickpwn method) of all new firmwares: 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. For the old iPhone unlock is also supported. Unlocking of iPhone 3G is not possible, but it does jailbreak iPhone 3G firmwares so that you can use Installer and Cydia. I will update the webpage as soon as it’s possible to . [via - iphone.unlock.no]

Update - 2.0.4 Pwnage Released (MAC)

It seems that some people have been having problems with our initial release, so we have PwnageTool 2.0.1 for you. It addresses the following issues:

  • It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer
  • It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
  • Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
  • The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.

Because of the AppCast URL fix, we recommend that everyone who downloaded PwnageTool 2.0 get this version, if they want to stay up to date automatically.

N.B: if PwnageTool 2.0 pwned your phone correctly the first time, you do not need to pwn again with 2.0.4.

iPhone 3G has been unlocked by Pwnage - Download PwnageTool-2.0 now (MAC):

Yes, this was just the news I was waiting for. Pwnage (iPhoneDevTeam) has released their first software that can easily unlock 2.0 firmware and iPhone 3G. This is just awesome. Here is how to do unlock your iPhone 3G (users who have upgraded their 1st Gen iPhones to 2.0 firmware can unlock it as well)

Please download the software from Here. Unzip it, Install and follow the instructions and you are good to go :)

iPhoneDevTeam - Update 1: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares.

Update 2: It looks like there aren’t enough TCP ports on that server, so _BigBoss_ has generously offered to mirror it.

Update 3: If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ;  if that directory already exists, remove any files in it.  Then re-run PwnageTool.

pwnage-tool-20-screenshot Unlock iPhone 3G

In summary Pwnage software supports:
iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

Few of the initial feedback from users who used this software (from iPhoneDevTeam’s blog)

  • Thank you. I downloaded it and used it and it worked flawlessly. I couldn’t be happier. Also, thank you for managing to surprise just about everyone in the world with this one - from embarassed
  • it’s working i upgraded my 1.1.4 to 2.0, but Wi-Fi has some problems ny application unable to connect to internet, can any one help in this - from kanna
  • Make sure you get the correct version, not the early released one that came back before Apple officially released it. Then you have to remember to remove the .zip at the end and keep it as a .ipsw - The icon will change to a little package box. ;) - from Lionman

If you are not able to download the zip file from the above links, please click here, or here.

Previous Firmware Updates:

There have been instances where users have upgraded to 1.1.4 using ZiPhone and are finding few strange issues cropping up. I would suggest to check these 3 posts of mine and try it out. I guess most of the issues which are cropping up are due to some files which are left in iPhone before upgrading to 1.1.4 and clashing with the new files which get installed. These usually happen when users install new apps through installer.app. Try either of these to article:

  1. ZIPHONE updated my firmware 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 but had few issues
  2. Update/Fix to the same FW version w/o loosing your Data !
  3. Fix No IMEI, Repair Needed, Ziphone bricks, Dead phones :)

——————————–

There are 2 ways to unlock/update iPhones. One way is to update the existing firmware(1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2 or 1.1.3) to the latest firmware that keeps getting released by Apple. Another one is to unlock iPhones that are bought by users all around the world. These iPhones come with latest firmware and are very difficult to unlock. I would recommend buying iPhones once the firmware that those iPhones are using have been jailbroken. You got to wait for 10 to 15 days after a new firmware has been released. This is a good time for people to find a way to jailbreak and unlock that very firmware. If you have any specific questions, do contact me any time.

1. If you have a Locked iPhone or Pre-activated AT&T iPhone which you have just bought, go for the steps below:

1.1.4 is released! Supported in newest version of ZiPhone!

from - iphone.unlock.no

I’ve teamed up with Zibri and i’m proud to present my latest Windows user interface for ZiPhone! This application will jailbreak, unlock and activate any version of iPhone extremely fast and easy!

To download, click the image below and then click “Download ZiPhone” (Mac version also available)

ZiPhone GUI by Unlock.no

If you get error “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)” you need to install .NET Framework 2.0. Problems, tips for improvements etc. can be posted here

2. If you prefer to update your firmware to the latest firmware using Installer.app, go for this:

from - iJailBreak.com

iJailBreak 0.6 Released: Supports 1.1.4 on all iPhones and iPod Touches

We’ve just released iJailBreak 0.6 (referenced to before as 0.5.5). This version provides 1.1.4 support for all iPhones and iPod Touches, and, as before, allows you to freely enable the $20 iPhone apps. It also adds com.apple.afc2 support, allowing for easy manipulation of the filesystem.

As always, iJailBreak is released under the GNU General Public License version 2, and can be downloaded by choosing Check For Updates in the iJailBreak Menu Bar, or at our Google Code (see below)

Enjoy!

UPDATE: We are currently having trouble with Google Code, so please download iJailBreak from here.

UPDATE 2: If you are having “Spamming AT” errors on your iPod touch, download the NVRAM Fixer from here.

UPDATE 3: We’re not sure quite how it happened, but the iJailBreak download on our server has been corrupted for some time. This has been fixed, so please try the download again (May 11, 2008).

How to Unlock iPhone in India

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (1 votes, average: 5 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

This is method is for 1.1.1 firmware only. Click Here for other firmwares.

I have been getting quite a few mails on how to in India. I would say its the same procedure mentioned in unlock.iphone.no. Let me put the steps here again and add points that I went through while I was unlocking my iPhone in Bangalore using an Airtel sim card.

Warning! Firmware version 1.1.2 is now released. If you bought a phone that had 1.1.2 preinstalled (it shows a picture of a cable and the iTunes icon), it is not possible to unlock it. If you did not have this firmware when you bought the phone, i do not recomment to update to this version yet. It’s very important that you don’t let iTunes restore to 1.1.2 as well, so always select firmware manually by holding Shift/Option key while clicking Restore. Details about restoring/upgrading here.

This tutorial assumes that your iPhone has firmware version 1.1.1. If you are unsure, here is how to check: On the emergency dial screen dial *3001#12345#* and tap Versions. Firware version should be 04.01.13_G. If it’s 03.14.08_G you have v1.0.2 and need to update it to 1.1.1 first. Read here first if you previously unlocked your phone.

Bypass activation and prepare phone for software installation

  1. Make sure you have a SIM-card with PIN turned off, and power on your phone (the supplied AT&T card works fine).
  2. On the activation screen, slide for emergency and dial: *#301# to make the phone call itself. (If the incoming call dialog quickly disappears but it keeps ringing, just dial 0 (remove *#301# first), and it will call itself)
  3. Answer the call, and tap on Hold
  4. Phone will call it self again, tap Decline. You will now be returned to the normal dialer.
  5. Tap on contacts, and tap the + icon to add a new. The only info you are going to add to this contact are two URL’s. To add a URL, tap Add new URL. The first URL is prefs followed by a colon: prefs: and the second is jailbreakme.com. Tap Save.
  6. Your contact now has two “web pages” - tap on the first one (prefs:). This will take you to the settings dialog. The reason you want this, is because you need to connect to a Wi-Fi network, so tap on Wi-Fi, and get connected to a network, and make sure the icon on top of the screen is indicating that you are connected. While you are in the settings dialog, you should also set: General ? Auto-Lock ? Never.
  7. Now, press the home button, and again, slide for emergency dial 0, Answer the call, Hold and Decline the new call so that you get to the contacts. Tap on your contact (No Name), and this time tap on the other home page, jailbreakme.com
  8. Safari will launch and show you a web page. Read through the text, before you Install AppSnapp
  9. Phone will return to activation screen, but don’t panic, just wait.
  10. Phone should automatically restart after almost a minute. . If it does not restart withing 2-10 minutes, please try again and again. Keeping trying until you succeed. Since many people download the AppSnapp from the same server, invariably it kicks you out. So keep trying over and over. If you still can’t do it, message me and I will get back.
  11. When the phone starts again, it should no longer say slide for emergency, but rather Slide to unlock It means it was successfull! Activation is now bypassed, and phone prepared for software installation! (If you are going to use an AT&T SIM, you won’t need to do the next step.)

Unlock Airtel, Vodaphone, Spice, IDEA or any other Indian SIM-lock

  1. Open installer, and install the update if prompted.
  2. Go to sources and tap Edit and Add
  3. Add this URL: http://i.unlock.no
  4. Tap Done and then Refresh
  5. Go to Install (at bottom) and scroll down to the Unlocking Tools category and install AnySIM
  6. When installed you can press the home button, and you will find a new AnySIM icon on your home screen. Launch it and follow the instructions.
  7. The unlocking process will take about 5-10 minutes, in the end it should say it was successful!
  8. To clean up your phone, launch Installer and uninstall AnySIM. Then go to Settings ? General ? Auto-Lock and set it to a prefered value.
Congratulations, you are done!
