These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on the 5.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please wait until we have posted a tutorial on how to update to iOS 5 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock. The jailbreak is also tethered which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Finally, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs by following this tutorial before continuing.

Step One

Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0)

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device)
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.

Step Three
Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button

Step Five
Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Six
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Seven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Eight
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.

Step Nine
Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.

Step Ten
Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Eleven
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

BOOT TETHERED
Once you have jailbroken you will need to rerun redsn0w to boot tethered.

Step One
From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.

Step Two
Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.

Steps to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4 Using Limera1n – Windows/Mac

I am going to reproduce iClarified method of jailbreaking iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 using Limera1n hack. I have always believed that iClarified produces the safest method of jailbreaking iPhones. First I am going to demo the Windows method (via this page) and then you will find the Mac method (via this page):

WINDOWS:

Limera1n supports iOS 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and 4.1. Remember: Do not update to iOS 4.1 if you need the unlock. Ultrasn0w does not support that baseband yet. The only exception is the iPhone 4. You can update to iOS 4.1 without upgrading your baseband by following this tutorial.

Dev Team have just updated their blog and here is the lastest update on iPhone 4 unlock – Ultrasn0w has been updated and it can now completed unlock any version of iPhone including iPhone 4.

The latest version of Ultrasn0w (build version 1.0-1) allows the owners of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G to unlock their devices running iOS 4.0 / 4.01.

Specifically it supports the following baseband versions…
* iPhone4 baseband 01.59
* 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04
yup, all of that is iOS 4.0 / 4.01 compliant!

Here is how to install Ultrasn0w v 1.0-1 and unlock your iPhones:

1) Back up your device using iTunes
2) Jailbreak your device using one of the currently available jailbreak methods – like JailbreakMe.com
3) Once jailbroken, look for Cydia app > launch it >  go to search, and search for Ultrasn0w
4) Make sure the Ultrasn0w version shows as v 1.0-1 and start the process.
IF you can’t find Ultrasn0w, add the following repository to Cydia: repo666.ultrasn0w.com. Then go back to Step 4 and search for Ultrasn0w again.
6) Download, install and run Ultrasnow 1.0-1
7) Follow instructions on screen and allow the program enough time (up to 20-30 minutes) to finish the unlocking process.
If everything has gone well, you should have an unlocked iPhone 4, 3GS or 3G running iOS v4.0 or v4.01 now.

If you have got stuck somewhere, try to entire process all over again or go to the comments section of iPhone Dev Team and look for a fix.

WOW: First browser-based iPhone 4 jailbreak launched

iPhone Dev Team has done it again. On Sunday, they released a jailbreak for the iPhone 4 at JailbreakMe.com.
Here is the best part of this jailbreaking proceedure, unlike previous jailbreaks, which required the device to be connected to a computer to run the update, the latest jailbreak is accomplished completely via mobile Safari loaded on the device. The browser-based software bypass reportedly works on all iOS devices, including iPhones, iPads, and iPods running iOS 4 and iOS 4.01, but it will reportedly not work on devices running the iOS 4.1 beta. But its really difficult to get through JailbreakMe.com, as the load on the server is mindboggling as of now.

Jailbreak iOS 4: You Can Now Move To iOS 4.0 If You Are On iPhone3G

Dev Team have updated their blog post with some good news.  If you are iPhone 3G, you can now try upgrading to iOS 4. WOW. But be careful. I would advice you to wait for 1 week atleast and then try. redsn0w will get more and more stable within next 7-10 days:

Update #1: redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G).   The download links for redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3 are:

For now, the redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today’s 4.0. It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.

Sn0wbreeze (Windows) can actually Jailbreak/Unlock 3.1.3 iPhone 3GS/3G/2G iPod Touch 2G/1G

Yes you are reading right, sn0wbreeze can actually jailbreak/unlock iPhone 3GS/3G. This works with windows for now and ModMyi has a detailed post on how to go about it.

After the botched launch of sn0wbreeze version 1.3 yesterday iH8sn0w has fixed the bugs and released a new working version. sn0wbreeze version 1.4 actually works and I had no issues with the pwnd .IPSW it created for my iPhone 3GS.

STOP!!! Do not upgrade your iPhone OS from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3 if you are on Jailbreak iPhone

Hold it, do not hit the upgrade button in your iTunes if you have jailbroken your iPhone. Looks like Apple has hit back against Jailbreakers. iPhone OS 3.1.3 is BIG trouble for Jailbreak iPhone users. Even though iPhone Dev Team has released a newer version of Redsn0w that allows 3.1.3 jailbreak, its not recommended. Dev Team calls this version of redsn0w for experimental purposes only.

How To Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 3G/3GS Via BlackRa1n and BlackSn0w

Instructions on how to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3G/3GS using BlackRa1n and BlackSn0w for Windows:

  1. Open your web browser of choice and navigate to www.blackra1n.com. Click the Windows logo at the bottom of the screen.
  2. When prompted save the download to your desktop.
  3. Then double click the blackra1n executable file from the desktop to launch the program
  4. Make sure your iPhone or iPod is connected to the computer then click the large make it ra1n button
  5. You iPhone will now be placed in recovery mode. You will see a picture of GeoHot that replaces the regular recovery mode screen on your device. blackra1n will run and then your device will reboot.
  6. Once your device reboots it will be jailbroken and you will notice a blackra1n icon on the Springboard. Make sure you have an internet connection and press to launch the application.
  7. Choose the installer application of your choice then press to select sn0w if you would like to unlock your device. Press the Install button at the top right of the screen to begin. BlackRa1n will begin to download and install the package you selected.
  8. If you chose to unlock device using blacksn0w you will be presented with a Post Install log for sn0w. CommCenter will be restarted and there is no need to reboot. If your carrier doesn’t support 3G then disable it.
  9. Press the Close button to continue. Once complete BlackRa1n will respring your iPhone and you will find the installer package of your choice on the Springboard.
  10. Once you have confirmed your installer package is working correctly you may use the Uninstall blackra1n button inside the BlackRa1n app to remove it from your springboard.

iPhone 3.1.x Finally Gets Jailbroken – No, It’s Not Dev-Team But GeoHot [Windows OS needed]

GeoHot (George Hotz) has done it again. Just a while back he released Blackra1n jailbreaking tool and is being tested by thousands of iPhone users worldwide currenly. Blackra1n can jailbreak any version of iPhone OS 3.1.x (3.1 and 3.1.2 firmwares). Unlocking is still not possible if you are on 3.1.x firmware.

To install Blackra1n, go to blackra1n.com and hit the windows icon at the bottom of the page. That will pull blackra1n.exe to your desktop. Install blackra1n and follow instructions to jailbreak your iPhone running on 3.1.x. Note that this exe file only supports Windows OS. Mac support should be up very soon.

The iPhone Dev Team has done it again. iPhone 3GS can now be jailbroken (unlocking is not yet possible). If you are running iPhone OS 3.1 on 3GS, Dev-Team’s PwnageTool can bust open your iPhone, provided it was previously pwned in 3.0 or 3.0.1 . AWESOME.

But if your iPhone had 3.1 OS, out of the box, you cannot use this PwnageTool.

iPhoneDevTeam has done it again. Its amazing how these guys jailbreak every new iPhone firmware within days. Dev Team released the new version of Pwnage Tool last evening, that will create a custom firmware package to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1 and also iPod touch. Note that this app works with Mac machines.

How To Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone If You Are On 3.0.1 firmware And Using RedSn0w V0.8

Quick Update: If you are Jailbreaking your iPhone and RedSn0w V0.8 is not recognizing your iPhone OS 3.0.1 version, here is how to solve this issue:

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update.  Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w.  The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one.   After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

You can now use PurpleSn0w to unlock iPhone 3GS as well

From now on, every time Apple releases a new firmware/OS for iPhone, iPhoneDevTeam and Geohot would release their own versions of jailbreaking/unlocking tools. Geohot had release PurpleRa1n, the first iPhone 3GS jailbreak just a few days back and now he has created his own iPhone 3GS unlock called PurpleSn0w. Pretty cool.

Below are the steps to unlock iPhone 3GS using PurpleSn0w (make sure that your iPhone is Jailbroken):

Be sure to have legit activated 3GS

Disable 3G if you don’t have it(like T-Mobile).

Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia

Install com.geohot.purplesn0w

Watch for success output in Cydia

Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone

7 Simple Steps To Unlock iPhone 3GS With UltraSn0w

Now that iPhone Dev Team have released Ultrasn0w for iPhone OS 3.0, unlocking 3GS is a cakewalk. Here is how to unlocking iPhone 3GS running on 3.0 OS:

  1. You need to first jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. Go to blog.iphone-dev.org and download Redsn0w tool.
  2. Install and Run Redsn0w. Carefully follow instructions and jailbreak your iPhone 3GS.
  3. Launch Cydia App.
  4. Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com. Note that the 0 in sn0w is not o alphabet but numeric zero.
  5. After installing this source in Cydia, search for “UltraSn0w”.
  6. Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone.
  7. Done. Your iPhone 3GS is unlocked now.

iPhone 3GS Finally Gets Unlocked – PurpleRa1n Does It This Time

Here are the steps to unlock your beloved iPhone 3GS:

  1. Go to Purplera1n.com and choose your OS.
  2. Plug in your iPhone to your PC/Mac. Make sure iTunes is closed.
  3. Install and Run PurpleRa1n. Click “Make it Ra1n”.
  4. iPhone will reboot and you will find a while icon called ‘Freeze’.
  5. Start Freeze and tap ‘Install Cydia’
  6. Start Cydia and lookfor Ultrasn0w.
  7. Download and run Ultrasn0w.
  8. Reboot your iPhone.
  9. You are done. Your iPhone is unlocked.

IMP NOTE: You will have to first jailbreak your iPhone 3G/2G to start using this downgrader called 3G Fuzzyband. To jailbreak your iPhone please follow these instructions on iClarified – Win | Mac. Once jailbroken, run this 3G Fuzzyband app from Cydia app that you would find on your iPhone Page 1.

What is this 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader? Fuzzyband is now available in cydia. This should be used instead of 3G Baseband Downgrader for downgrading the baseband on phones containing the 5.8 bootloader.

Benefits over original downgrader:

  • Does version checking, will only downgrade if phone is eligible
  • Downgrades all versions of baseband from 2.30.03 to 4.26.08 (3.0 beta5)
  • Reports current bootloader version on screen

Once you have successfully installed 3G Fuzzyband, you need to install Yellowsn0w app from the same Cydia app. Once thats done, you will be able to plugin any SIM into your iPhone 3G/2G and start enjoying iPhone. For instructions on how to install Yellowsn0w and how to unlock, please scroll down.

It’s called 3GBBD and can downgrade your 2.2.1 firmware’s baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00 with just few clicks. You dont have to be an iPhone techie to do this.

It’s now possible to downgraded iPhone 3G’s baseband from from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00. Please read this post for a complete walkthrough – You can now downgrade 3G Baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00

Note that the steps mentioned the above post is pretty technical. You need to be careful while preforming these steps. Once you successfully downgrade the baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00, you can then download QuickPwn from blog.iphone-dev.org and install it. Then run Yellowsn0w from Cydia and unlock your iPhone 3G.

With this you can now purchase brand new iPhone 3G which is on firmware 2.2.1 and unlock it completely. :) )

WARNING: PLEASE DO NOT UPDATE YOUR IPHONE TO 2.2.1 FIRMWARE. IPHONE 2.2.1 CAN ONLY BE JAILBROKEN. IT CANNOT BE UNLOCKED

via – blog.iphone-dev.org - Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update. If you want to use Yellownsn0w you will need to create and restore using a custom .ipsw that will allow you to update safely to 2.2.1 without applying the 02.30.03 baseband update. [NOTE: this restoration process is not successful. No many have been able to successfully downgrade their iPhones to 2.2.0]

If you want to buy a new iPhone 3G and expect it to be unlocked using yellowsn0w unlocking method, it will not happen. New iPhone 3G can only be jailbroken.

  2. Use the latest firmware to pwn your phone (download it from Apple here). This will allow you to install Cydia or Installer. If you just updated your phone or updated your phone on the computer you are running quickpwn on, you probably won’t have to download the firmware.
  3. Then, add the repositories (DO NOT ENTER THESE URLs INTO YOUR BROWSER per Dev Team’s instructions). For Cydia enter: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ For Installer enter: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/
  4. Install yellowsn0w. Run it.
  5. Turn off the iPhone and install your third party SIM.NB: f you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings.
  6. Turn on the phone. Wait until your carrier pops up. If it doesn’t, take the SIM out and reinstall it.

Keep checking Yellowsn0w for the latest versions of quickPWN and yellowsn0w if you face any issue while unlocking your iPhone 3G.

3G Unlock – iPhone Dev Team

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

  • The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
  • This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
  • You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
  • The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.  It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.
  • Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at.  We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.
  • We’ll stream a live demo of the unlock before Christmas (see the update at the end of this post)

    Hi Rupesh, you will have to follow these steps:
    1. You need to virginize before going out of 1.0.2, i sugest you put your phone in DFU mode restore to 1.0.3 and jailbreak so that you can virginize.

    2. After you virginzie you can use WINPWN or PWNAGE (depending if you are on a PC or a MAC) and DFU to 2.0, however 2.0.1 is just out so i’ll recommend you wait.

    I tried for DFU mode by using Ziphone or iliberty n others…but it doesnt recognize my iphone. Screen always shows the Data Cable with Itunes.

    Hey guys, I just official upgraded my first gen Iphone 8gb to 2.1 firmware thru’ Itunes 8.0 and still my Iphone was unlocked but not jail broken. I had to jailbreak my iphone 2.1 thru quick pwn in order to have cydia & installer, which i did. All the apps works flawless. 2.1 firmware is really great with lot of bug fixes specially i was facing hell of a problem in backing up the time consumed was too long and phone book was damn slow. Do upgrade your Iphone to 2.1 it is all worth but ensure that your Iphone should have been pwned before either on 2.0.2 or 2.0.1. Do write to me if you need any help.

    Hey Prashant, you can unlock your 3G using a TurboSIM. There is no software based unlocking method yet available. Look for turboSIM for 3G on google and buy one. 3G cannot be unlocked using softwares like Pwnage and/or WinPwn or ZiPhone.

    Congrats Sharad. Since I dont have any knowledge about Gevey 3G turbo SIM, I wont be able to comment on this, sorry. As far as I know, yes you should be able to user an iPhone 3G with an turbo SIM. You might have cut your vodafone SIM card to fit that turbo SIM though.

    And, since its an Hardware unlocked iPhone, DONT EVER UPGRADE YOUR IPHONE. or else it will get bricked.

    The Gevey 3G card is so thin that one can put a regular sim card along with the Gevey 3G. I tried it with a T-Mobile (US provider) sim card and it worked.
    I was able to buy the 3G iPhone for the equivalent of INR 18,000 and if what they say about unlocking is true (see below link), then why pay INR 35,000.

    Hi Lalit. There is no software unlocking method for iphone 3G yet. Pwnage and Ziphone are still trying to unlock it.

    You can only unlock it wiht the help of a turboSIM. This is not reliable and you cannot upgrade your iphone ever.

    turboSIMs are available in India as well. Checkout ebay.in or just search for turboSIM for iPhone 3G in google.

    Hi, i have a really serious problem with my iphone!

    Firstly, i bought a new iPhone 3G from ebay with a Gevey turbosim and used it successfully for a couple of days and then decided to put some music on it from my iTunes and thats when i was asked to upgrade the software to version 2.something, which i did and now the iPhone says “insert valid sim…” and displays a picture of the iphone and connecting lead.

    i know ive probably been an idiot by doing the update but it was an innocent mistake. Is there any solution to this or am i basically stuck with an expensive paperweight? Any help GREATLY appreciated.

    There is no software based unlocking mechanism yet. Since you used Gevey turboSIM to unlock 3G, the only option left is to get in touch with the makers of Gevey turboSIM and ask for help.

    Sorry about this James, I dont think you have much option left. If Gevey turboSIM cant help you, you will have to wait for either Pwnage team (blog.iphone-dev.org) or Zibri (Ziphone.org) to find a software solution for iPhone 3G. These guys had done a great job with iPhone 1st Gen.

    You can you use a turboSIM to unlock iPhone 3G. There is no software unlocking software yet.

    Look for turboSIM for iPhone in ebay.
    But none of these SIMs are reliable.

    Since you have bought iPhone from US, you dont have much choice.

    You can hard reset without losing any data. To hard reset – simultaneously hold the top and home buttons for several seconds, keep hold till the screen flickers and goes off. Then restart and check.

    2nd option would be restore your iPhone all together. Your iphone will go back to factory settings.

    Hi, buying iphone from US and using turboSIM to use it in India is not at all advisable. But if you have already bought it, buy a turboSIM from ebay.com and start using it.

    You cannot upgrade your iPhone. If you hit upgrade from iTunes, your phone will be bricked for life.

    Yes, 2g is definitely better. The unlocking sw like pwnage and ziphone are much better than turboSIMs..

    Go for 2G, you will be able to upgrade as well. Just that you will have to re-unlock everytime you upgrade.

    Ridhi, the 2.2.1 firmware locks up iPhones. Its a very cumbersom process to upgrade to 2.2.1 and to downgrade its all the more tricky..

    The camera folder address is /var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE.
    I wouldnt suggest you to upgrade to 2.1 yet. its pretty tricking and your baseband gets upgraded, you might not able to use your iphone for days.

    I dint think iPhone 3GS can be unlocked using a software. There will turboSIMs that will unlock the phone. But these turbosims are highly unreliable.

    iphone 3g itself hasnt yet been fully unlocked and its been over a year now that its been in the market.

    I would suggest not go for iPhone 3GS from US or from grey market and try to use it in India

    Thanks true.. if your iPhone is unlocked/jailbroken, you cannot upgrade your firmware to latest version from iTunes. You will have to wait for iPhoneDevTeam to come with a hack for that version and then upgrade. The instructions come with the upgraded firmware and shared by this team on their blog.

    But this wouldnt happen when you are on turboSIM.

    You might have to completely remove iTunes and reinstall one of the older versions? Are you on 2.2.1 or lower. If yes, go with iTunes 7.x version

    You need to first install redsn0w. Download redsn0w from http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ and install ultrasn0w from cydia.

    This is pretty complex for a novice. If you dont get this flow, go to National market/Bajaj complex near Magestic and get it unlocked by a mobile phone mechanic. Theymight charge you 1000-2000rs.

    hi dev…so i’m planin to buy an iphone from the US (since they have dropped prices t oa whopping 99$ i.e. only about 5k INR)
    i think if i buy it at the moment it’ll be version 3.0…is it possible to sofware unlock it so that i can use it with my airtelcsim? how?
    will i be able to upgrade the firmware or should i refrain from doing so?

    You mean you want to jailbreak without unlocking? jailbreak will help you download cydia apps whereas unlocking you help you use any SIM.

    You will lose your vodafone warranty for sure, if you jailbreak.

    I just returned from US and trying to jailbreak and Unlock. I was able to install blackra1n software and then when i tried to download cyndia , it is asking for an internet connection. But since i have discontinued my ATT service, i cannot install it. what should i do if i do not have internet connection?

    Sam, you need to first get some WiFi internet connectivity. Without WiFi you wont be able to download anytime. Once you have WiFi, you will be able to download Cydia and then eventually unlock your iPhone.

    If it was iPhone 4 running on 4.0 OS, I would have said yes its possible to unlock it. But if you are on 4.1 OS, its still not possible. The dev team is still trying to crack it.

    Try with another SIM. If that works, call up vodafone and ask for a new SIM. Most probably your SIM is outdated

    MC135LL = iPhone 3GS 3.1.3 16GB (black)
    83015 fisrt five serial = 15th week of 2010 = new iBoot (359.3.2)

    Modem Firmware: 05.12.01

    No Chris. Jailbreak wont work the old way. You need to search the web with your specific model to get the right jailbreak technique.
